Who is from Europe?!

Do you think it will really happen? I will also keep seeing the UK as a part of Europe for sure. But it would be awful anyway...

I still hope for a last-minute-remain-surprise.

Let’s see...

I guess we shouldn’t get political but I can’t remember this country being so divided and unpleasant as well.
It’s just like turkeys voting for Christmas! On the bright side I’m off to Berlin for a week on Sunday and whatever happens it won’t stop me spending as many holidays as possible in the EU.

I like how non-political this place is, so will only say I really really hope not, and have spent time and energy fighting for that.
However, I sadly suspect via the current incompetent incoherent / non functioning Gov we have, the likelihood is quite high.

Won't stop me travelling, just may be by horse and cart.

I am from the UK and identify myself as European.
And will remain doing so even if the lunatics succeed in their utter unnecessary nonsense.

And rightly so. Europe is much more than a bunch of historic agreements between old white men. It’s about people and the boundary-spanning infrastructures such as railways and roads and radio that were conceived by engineers (...and often not politicians!) to unite these people - long before the birth of the European Union. Just like how the USA is much more than the...stuff we now see on tv. It's people and ideas and practices and culture and music and so on.

I’m proud to have made a minor contribution to this project:

http://www.inventingeurope.eu/

It offers an alternative to the top-down perspective: the shaping of Europe as a bottom-up integration process that predates the whole 'Brussels' thing. The webpage explains the project best:

“The Inventing Europe website is a pioneering collaboration between historians and cultural heritage institutions throughout Europe. Together, these national collections shape a transnational collective memory of Europe’s cultural heritage. The goal of the website is to cross borders and explore the history, culture and formation of Europe through the lens of technological objects and images (...)

Who has decided how Europeans have dressed and dwelled? Traveled and dined? Worked and played? Who, in fact, can be credited with the shaping of Europe? Certainly inventors, engineers, and politicians played their parts. But in the making of Europe, consumers, tinkerers, and rebels were an unrecognized force—until now.”

I've considered for a while writing a piece on 'timekeeping' as an interesting addition to the website. I feel fairly certain - but would need to do the research first - that there is an interesting transnational dimension to the birth of the wrist watch, for example.

But to answer the original question: I’m European. Can’t say I’m proud of it: I tend to take pride solely in things I have had some degree of agency in. I’m pretty happy with it, though 😀

I'll leave politics aside and just say I'm originally from southern England and now live in northern Scotland.
