Fantastic breakdown, thank you.

Another question:

was watching a video on the Ed White last evening and the presenter mentioned, against the 3861 and at 3x the cost, the Ed White has a movement that will not stand the rigors of use & time without more needed service (than the 3861) due to the fact that it is handmade (vs the 3861 being computer/robotically made).
That struck me as odd yet also made some semblance of sense owing to the consistency of Machine over Man.
Any thoughts on that?

Yes.
It makes some sense to a degree.
Though I'm not necessarily convinced about the rigors of time and use from a practical point of view. Theoretically speaking, the presenter probably makes a good case given the backdrop of Metas testing.

The 321's design is about 80 years old, it's really old skool, of course it can't compete with the current 3861 that has much better materials, better tolerances, better design. The handmade canard is just marketing to help justify a much higher price for a very old design. But that's not the point of the whole watch collecting thing. If technology and supreme time keeping was the goal we would all be wearing high tech quartz watches. The Swiss thought that was where their future would be taking them in the 70's until enough leaders understood that the Swiss's biggest advantage and selling point is TRADITION. The 321 has tradition in spades, something that the 3861 won't achieve for decades, if ever.

Thank you, makes perfect sense to me.

In an interesting (or not) sidebar to this thread... I began deep diving the Ed White and then looking at what's available "out there" (read: flippers but mainly the Grey Bois).
Found one and for shits & giggles inquired as to pricing flexibility.
Fella is asking $22,859.00 USD, unworn/NIB... he said he could take $859 off for me if I were to transact the deal privately as it would save him fees.
When I asked about trades he mentioned he was interested so I "offered" up two Rolex (the new Explorer and a discontinued OP ~ 3/6/9 blue dial, both 36mm) he then countered that he would be interested, of course after receiving them for inspection, and if the photos were accurate he "could do the two Rolex + 10k".

We reside in such strange times.

Here's one for the Speedmaster professors here at OF...

what would be the best choice of Speedmaster if the following were required:
1. 39/40mm case
2. Not a Reduced... so handwound movement.
3. 3861 (sorry for outing my ignorance on this one) style hands ~ not broad arrow or the type on the FOIS.
*I don't know what the FOIS and 3861 hands are called? 👎🤔

Essentially, a 3861 but in a FOIS, '57 Trilogy or Ed White case size.

You can get a FOIS or '57 Trilogy and change the hands to baton style hands, it's been done a lot on the FOIS and could be done on the Trilogy. The 3861 style hands are baton, the FOIS are Alpha.

I'd love a new Ed White but I'm not paying what they're asking. Now a new Hesalite step dial, well, that's completely different. It's either that or spend the money to restore my 145.022-69 to it's original configuration and make it waterproof. Not sure that's possible, however, or who.could even get close.

You have a watch, and accompanying photo, for every significant event... it's what I dig about you most.
👍😎

No watch(es) in the “ool” back in 1993/1994! Hoisting Mrs. Mad Dog (it was Mad Dog’s GF at the time) in the “ool”. Notice there’s no “p” in the “ool”! 😁

It won't be long before Omega put the 3861 into the Ed White case. You can count on it.

Very few things are hand made anymore. I don’t know what parts of the 321 are handmade vs a 3861 movement, but it’s not like it’s entirely hand made

I kinda hope this happens because my only true complaint about my 3861 is the size... I really favor 40-39-38 in case sizes -- in particular with chronos.
So what do you think the Big O markets it as: Speedmaster Professional with two different size cases or the "Ed Sorta White"?

I thought it was hand-assembled not handmade... my fault for having said as much above.

The straight-lug version could be marketed as a Speedmaster '62 in the Heritage Models
