I've been through at least 20 pages of watch sales and I'm leaning strongly toward the Seamaster, although there seems to be a lot more Speedmasters for sale.
I like the cleaner lines without sub dials.

Other than looks is there a basis for making a choice? There are different movement numbers - is that a significant part of the decision? I don't want to go larger than a 42, and lighter is probably better.

i assume you are thinking modern/new? not vintage?
a key question is 'what are you going to be using the watch for?' do you dive? swim a lot? what work do you do? both watches can take an awful lot, but a key difference is water resistance. If you swim/dive, the seamasters would be the way to go.

 

If I had more money I would be thinking new. Since I don't I'm thinking used.

 

Go with what looks good to you, although you never really know until you try it on. You can't go wrong with the classic Seamaster 300 series. The Electric Blue 2255.80 or the basic black 2254.50 models are popular and come up for sale often enough. Both come in 36 and 41 mm sizes, and both also offer titanium models if weight is an issue.
