Which one...

hi,
First post in this forum 馃榾
I'm already a very long time a watchcollector but for some reason I never bought the iconic speedmaster.

This has to change and I'm buying one

The question is "which one"

It must be a manual wind and for my first one I do prefer the hesalite. So the cheapest professional is probably the one to get.
Probably the first time I want the cheapest the most lol

I don't know all these references but should I take the most recent (new) or should I look for one made in 1980-1990-2000
What are the differences between these? I understand the newest one has by far the best bracelet and the box and goodies are nice to have.

I don't care about the price ( but not unlimited so don't push me to a 20k rare vintage piece)

Are their any limited editions I should consider?
I was too late for the latest one they introduced on Instagram.

Thanks in advance!

Not much use when you're looking for modern.

Fair point! I must have skimmed over his time scale.

Welcome, have a look at a 3590.50 for a good compromise of vintage look (tritium markers=nice yellow patina )and price,if you prefer a display back look for a 3592.50 both 80s-90s.

The basic moon watch is the iconic Speedmaster. 1861 movement manual wind, hesalite crystal. Good starting point.

Omega just released the '57 model though. Modern automatic movement but the classic style of the original. You have options - a LOT of options.

Doesn't the 60th speedmaster have an 1861?

+1 on the 3590, it's the best blend of modern and vintage and less expensive than much older or much newer Speedies. I have two 3590s that have aged beautifully but quite differently from one another:

I come at this from a different angle - not a collector (yet!) - so I look for a watch to wear daily. That changes the calculus of what model with which to start. Hence my new 44mm Moon Watch Chrono. A purist would go for something older and more classic.

Well, since you are the only one here who knows your taste, I would spend a couple of minutes "googling" for Speedmaster limited edition and see if there is anything that catches my eye. You can also look at the poster Omega released for the 60th anniversary of the Speedy. Lots of different iterations of the Speedy there:

For me, if I didn't have the ordinary Speedy Moon watch, I would buy that. Plain and simple but by far the coolest. If I were determined to get a limited edition, I would probably go for the Gemini IV or the Speedy Apollo XIII. The Gemini IV's blue dial is amazing

Chronofan, I was putting myself through the same questions you are doing and finally I came to the conclusion that there will always be limited edition, rare and vintage pieces to add to a collection but there is also something to be said for "the classic" Moon Watch. It's a classic for a reason and that made my decision rather easy. I purchased the newest available Speedmaster Professional w/the hesalite chrystal and no display back and could not be happier. Sure, the display back is cool but so is all the NASA writing on the version that I decided on. Can't go wrong with the 1861 Moon Watch that is currently being sold at Omega AD's. Happy Hunting. Let us know what you decide on.

Andy K, those both look great. Vintage, but not too vintage, is a very cost effective approach.
