Which gold Speedy is better: black or white?

I just had a chance to try two gold Speedmasters: the new Sedna gold black dial and the Canopus gold white dial. New Speedies are not normally my thing, but both of these were pretty amazing in the metal.

Which of these would you choose?

The black dial would steal it, for me.
It’s a pleasing contrast, especially on the leather strap.

The Sedna. As you saw, the color is rich, warm, recognizable as a precious metal and luxurious. With it's black dial, it is also the closest gold watch to a Speedmaster professional. The AML, stepped dial, dropped end chrono hand, long indexes, and even the aluminum bezel are all features of the early Speedys, not to mention the 105.012 style case. It is a Speedmaster that also happens to be in gold.

The Canopus is beautiful also. If I had to choose only one (which I did), the Sedna wins. Frankly, i don't understand the stealth wealth concept. If you want a gold watch, why try to hide it? It's one thing to say that you love the color of white gold, but why would a person buy a white gold watch because they were worried about what other people think?

Some people may not like gold watches. But for those who do, the Sedna is spectacular. IMHO, it is not only more attractive than the Canopus, but it is the most attractive gold Speedmaster to date, including the 50th Moonshine. It's main competitor is the new Moonshine Panda, which I haven't seen in the flesh, yet.

It is a difficult question when viewing pictures alone. But in the flesh, the Sedna truly stands out.

I think the Canopus is spectacular, especially that textured dial.

Sedna looks too close to the stock Speedy Pros IMO. But it's certainly gold-er.

Great call in going for the black dial. The Canopus gold watch has its charms, but the Sedna gold watch is just radiant. You’re absolutely right that all the features of an early Speedie help to make it pop vs. the Canopus model. The only thing I can find fault with is the legibility of the black on black subdials. But overall this is a watch that feels luxurious and yet still understated.

Separately, I also had a chance to try out the platinum Speedy with a black onyx dial and lunar meteorite subdials, which costs more than twice the price of the gold Sedna black dial on a strap. I was underwhelmed.

This is the case with several references, unfortunately. The Apollo 8, 35th Apollo 11, 35th Apollo-Soyuz. We have to suffer a little for our passion.

Interesting! I haven't seen one in person but this seemed like a perfect wat h to me. Not cheap of course, but what a design. You help me to move on.

One thing that hasn't been said about the Sedna, it could be considered (by me anyway) a relative bargain. Compared to other brands 18k offerings, it packs a lot of watch. That METAS movement, good reserve, hacking. It doesn't have gold in the movement but it is still attractive. It's also hard to capture in photos. That black dial is BLACK. It's pretty, pretty, pretty nice.

I fully agree. It's a very impressive watch for the money.

I was surprised too. It just really couldn't stack up against the Sedna gold black dial, though. You made the right call.

As M'Bob likes to say, without a picture it didn't happen...
So nice. I am sorely tempted. The current state of my investment portfolio is making it hard to justify.

Calling @Twocats.
Apologies, in Dubai and actually working for a change...

I personally prefer the the dial on the Canopus but I can't read the time without really concentrating and squinting. I have given it to my watch repair genius and ordered the black hands from the white Snoopy dial to have them fitted so lets see when it comes back how much different it looks.

I was making this same choice last year.
Seeing how the hands and indices caught the light when looking at an off angle sealed the deal for me

Between the 2, Sedna for sure. It looks awesome in person! Hoping to compare it against the new Moonshine Gold on rubber. The color looks warmer than the moonshine 50th.
