Where to retire, or not..

I'm actually surprised this point hasn't gotten more traction. Many men statistically die soon after retirement. Is it feelings of less importance and self worth...or being confined with the wife for the greater part of each day. I won't speculate on which of these are accurate. But me? I'll die at work, thank you very much.
Almost entirely the 'loss of importance'. I knew (not personally) a senior VP at the company I retired from who was no. 2 or 3 from the top. I met him a few times, a real bastard, imo. From shareholder documents he was pulling in $50-100 million a year in salary, bonuses and stock options. This guy could snap his fingers at 2am and have some underling do some research for him, and ready by 8am the next morning. Corporate jets, the swankiest hotels, the whole ball of wax. Retired at the mandatory age of 65 and retired to Dallas Texas, not far from corporate hqs, and dropped dead a year later at age 66. His twin brother said he could never get over the loss of power and the sudden realization that he was a nobody as far as the corporation was concerned, just another (rich} retiree. He had no purpose in life.

Now this could just be an outlier but if you are a Type A personality retirement will not work well for you. I always tell people approaching retirement, 'know yourself and your interests in life. If you don't have any purpose other than your job, stay working'.

Me, I've got stupid mechanical watches and I'm watching snooker on YouTube......but at least I've got outside interests. And tomorrow is a sunny day, going to put some miles on my motorcycle.

I think you definitely something to retire to and that is different for everyone. I am a type A, take over the world kind of guy, so I plan to retire and save animals. I have a goal of saving 1 million animals. No clue how to do it yet, but that should keep me pretty busy. I also want to be a grandparent.

We have all been married to our spouses for over 30+ years but our biggest issue has been adjusting to so much time together with spouses. .....have a good honest conversation with partners about spending 24/7 in one another's company

Not quite 30 years for us, but getting close. I totally get the 24/7 comment. I quite my job 5+ years ago and my wife quite hers 3+ years ago and we are literally together 24/7. So while we still work a home based business together, we each have our own office, and if not for different offices, I think it would be a challenge. Plus she has no interest in watches, and if we shared an office, she would really get sick and tired of seeing my computer screen open to Omega Forums every time she look over towards me.

And only one watch pic in this entire 8 page thread! I am getting ready to take off for a 5 day trip (without the wife) and taking these watches with me.

In the interest of disclosure, the wife and I bought a house in the Austin Texas area (SW Austin near Dripping Springs) and we are in the process of moving from Minnesota...

Steve, congrats on the move! Folks, this is great opportunity to buy a nice snow blower and some snow tires!

Anyone have any particular knowledge about Puerto Rico?
No tax on retirement income.
Health insurance is cheap with US trained doctors.
Cheap real estate with no property taxes on your primary residence.
There are no jobs, but I'm not going to be seeking one.
Lots of sun and a sea full of fish.

It's either the right place at the right time or there's something very significant that I'm missing.

I must have left clicked instead of right clicked. Since this was a retirement thread I mistakenly thought Sun City rules 55 and over

Heavily damaged by Hurricane Irma and Maria and very slow to rebuild due largely to endemic corruption.
Utility systems were rickety before the hurricanes due to decades of mismanagement and neglect.
Most of the highly educated and talented people have left for the US, don't count on A1 grade medicine.
C-R-I-M-E

Bottom line, PR has been run by corrupt people for decades, just like most large US cities. (Same party, begins with 'D')

I wouldn't even think of retiring to Puerto Rico. If you are interested go down there and live for six months or so, I don't think you will last that long..

Snow blowers are not required from residents as the city takes care of all snow removal 😜

Another states to consider is where I live now, Colorado. Most people imagine CO having harsh winters, which is a total misconception. The winters are very mild and so are the summers and it is blue sky and sun most of the year with tones of things to do in all seasons.

No ... no reason to move to Colorado. Not recommended. Just come for brief visits and leave your money. Or send your kids here for college and pay out-of-state tuition.

No one likes the Philippines? Imagine an asian Puerto Rico (with all the good and bad that comes with it), but lots cheaper.

Maybe that’s their new travel slogan “Come to the Philippines. It’s the Asian Puerto Rico”
