My sister retired and moved from Chicago to Happy Valley outside Portland about four years ago...main reason to be close to grand kids.. I sense is a move she now regrets... 😬

If forced to choose between temp extremes, I will run towards the cold!

If she was leaving Chicago, she may be very happy with the move. 😉
...and some people absolutely love it here. It's not completely horrible, it just doesn't suit me.

cannot think of a worse place to retire than chicago. . for my money coldest winters in the US (soul-crushing cold + brutal wind, and no skiing to compensate), costs are very high, and taxes are going one way forever because the city and state are both borderline insolvent. . . no bueno

I grew up in Evanston, but a long time ago. Chicago was fantastic back then, but both the city and world have changed dramatically.

Agreed. Snow belongs in the mountains.

I too experienced many of the fantastic aspects of the Windy City myself way back then...

As someone coming close to retirement and living in Dublin Ireland, Spain is going to be my second home for 6 months of the year. This is to take advantage of cheaper cost of living, cheaper accommodation costs and much better weather conditions. As an EU citizen I have travelled extensively in the United States and Florida appeals greatly to me but because of residency rules , even if I purchase a property in Florida I cannot live there for more that 90 days in one year. So its the sunny Costa Del Sol for me in the next couple of years . Everyone should enjoy their retirement.

not quite my vision of retirement in style
😁

….What can be added to the happiness of a man who is in health, out of debt, and has a clear conscience?....

I have all three of those, and they’d mean very little if not for my family. 😉

well, if you bring an RV into the mix as it was suggested, then the vehicle must be highly reliable! 😀

Any others? is your retirement in the near horizon as mine? Are you looking to stay on your current state/country or looking forward to move out of the desert as @The Father mentioned earlier?

Just curious...

🍿
I’m at least 20 years away and have no real plan.

If I had to choose today, I’d prefer summers where we live now in Southern Ontario Canada (weather, low cost of living, healthcare, family, roots) and winters in New Orleans Louisiana. My in-laws live their now, and we usually visit once a year. I am a big fan of the warmer weather, the food, music and generally laid back atmosphere. There’s a vibe in that city I would enjoy being immersed in up to half a year in retirement.

I was there too and seems it was yesterday 🙁 a lot can (and very likely will) change for you in the next 20-30 years..

One financially advantageous option could be retirement in Portugal. Great weather, food, cheap real estate and rents, lots of beaches, and no taxes on pension or income for 10 years. Lots of Europeans are doing it now.
