Where to retire, or not..

If you have a few million dollars lying around, there's a "residence" available for purchase, your application doesn't get blackballed by the existing owners, and you like cruising, this could be the way to go --- spend some of your year on "The World".

I actually saw it in southern Tasmania a few years ago (at least I'm fairly certain it was that ship).

I suggest retiring where your connections are. Moving away from where you are established doesn’t make sense to me.

"established connections" is a criteria to consider, but will not be weighted equally in the decision process by everyone... 😉

How about Panama or Chile ….. just to throw in some wild cards.
Well not such a strange suggestion. I packed up full time work, 20 years ago at the age of 40. I work part-time and my wife doesn't really want to live in the UK anymore. London is too busy and Dorset is too inbred.
She misses her family so it's looking more and more like some of my senior years will be spent with my in-laws, up in the Peruvian Andes... 'fakkin' around with llammas and wooly hats! 😲

I think, financially, I will only manage about 3 months a year in Peru. She can stay with her family but it will be back to England for me for the rest of the year.👍

Generally yes, so long as they are bona-fide Florida residents.

Not going to get into details here, as there are many flavors of “retirement income”.

BTW, I know of no state that has a sales tax which exempts automobiles.

NH and Oregon?
Very misleading article.

Is that a similar passtime to what the Welsh do with sheep?

I knew there's more than one reason for my 3x week Tabata schedule! 😜

I live in Florida and love it. My definition of retirement isn't doing nothing, its doing what I want when I want. Still making money, in fact more than when I was corporate wienie, because I can focus more on investments and saving money, instead of making and spending to keep up a lifestyle that's expected of a corporate wienie.

Neither of those states have any sales tax, so no sales tax on auto purchases.

However, many states have road use taxes on cars based on value on an annual basis and others tax based on weight.

Yup, some how Gov(s) have to pay for road maintenance, lights, signs and more ---there's no free lunch.

About 10-15 years ago, having resided in the area for a short time, Austin became one of my top three locations to settle in --sure is a nice town, not too big, not too small - just the right size IMO 👍 but I can not deal with the extreme heat of Central Texas summers, how in heaven are you guys able to enjoy a beer and grilling in the back yard when temps are 130F? 😵‍💫 Last year, I visited my sister in Round Rock --in the middle of your 2018 sizzling August --and this trip convinced me to agree with you now, I will hate it! 🫨 plus Central Texas does not meet my criteria of a place to enjoy the lush and green of mother nature... I told my sister on my way out...I think I saw maybe only four, five trees (note that bushes don't count as trees for me) in the entire area 😜

I live in Oregon and it is the last place I'd want to retire. I may be biased though, because I can't wait to leave anyway. Florida won't work for me because I don't to the heat/humidity for me. Originally from California, and while I love the climate, I don't feel like financing their ideals. Going back to Reno is one option due to favorable taxes and proximity to mountains I love. Chile also tops the list if I want to do the expat thing, as does Costa Rica.

My sister retired and moved from Chicago to Happy Valley outside Portland about four years ago...main reason to be close to grand kids.. I sense is a move she now regrets... 😬

If forced to choose between temp extremes, I will run towards the cold!
