I had a Base 000 many years ago, I wanted to like it, but the style and size made it difficult to wear with anything other than casual wardrobe.

I agree, in the doldrums at the moment...but I think they will have their day again.

Il like that style of watch especially the pam with the crown protection, but it’s a little bit boring, for me all panerai look to other panerai. This signature thing is not for me.

I thoroughly enjoy Panerai as a brand. They're unique and fun to wear. Having one or two as part of my collection is a must for me.

Fakes are.....Fakes. Genuine ones will bounce back.

Problem with this is, the used market is a mine field, determining the genuine article is no easy feat, hence not a risk I'm willing to take, I'm not risk adverse, but stakes too high for me with these. I don't think I'm the only one who feels this way, so market is smaller than with other brands. Like how they look, like the heritage, not a huge fan of the bling appeal

That's your decision, which is fine.
This does not only apply to Panerai

I‘ve handled quite a few of them at work. The newer versions have lovely looking and finished movements. Not a fan of the models with the big crown guard, although that‘s what makes them immediately stand out from the rest of the watches out there . Can‘t say much about long time movement reliability. They all seem to be well build, the cases are nicely finished and their ceramic cases have a great feel and weight to them.

Would I buy one for my self? New, no way! Used, maybe at some point in the future.

As @WatchVaultNYC pointed out, selling them can be tough. Customers either love them, or they take a glance at them, ask for the price and start looking for other, more conservative watches in the same price range.

Cheers,

Max

I wanted/want a Panerai PAM422. They dont make my ideal Radiomir, so I thought the 422 was a pretty good choice with all the quintessential Panerai features. Problem is I haven't tried one on and I'm apprehensive of the 47mm size.... it seems like it would be excessive even for a Panerai.

Im a big fan, love the sandwich dial, live the simplicity of layout and design ... yes they can be big and chunky, but I find some elegance thanks to the simplicity ... you certainly cant call then over busy or fussy
Mines Ti cased so wears very comfortably.

I never had any PAM nor never wanted them, purely because of their design which I found quite pretentious.
Not really familiar with the brand's origin nor heritage, but they've been connected to Rolex somehow, which I guess has made them a popular brand at some point. Especially popular among serial owners of Rolex.
For me PAM is (was?) like Tudor but outside Rolex SA, and PAM was more overpriced and pretty ugly to be honest.
Not my thing.

What is it about them that you find pretentious? Of all the negative adjectives I've seen associated with the brand, that is a new one for me...

Yes. This is an Omega forum but curious your take on their entry level Luminor Sub vs SMP.

The Panerai should be the 2nd or 3rd watch you have. Not the first.

One you already have your Rolex and/or Omega Speedmaster, then the Panerai makes great sense. Because by now, you should know what to look for. Navigating the Panerai sea for a first watch is daunting.

In their defense they offered to replace those with a higher grade version. I wonder how many people took them up on it.

Given all the controversy with this model, it wouldn’t surprise me to see those watches which have kept their original movement, become more sought after in the future, compared to those which have been replaced with the better finished movement.

As for Panerai generally, I like the brand particularly their base models in SS, however I would only buy a Pam second hand.

I often wondered if this model was meant to be a joke from Panerai. Look at the name!!!

new at this, so looking for some guidance. I recently had the task of going through my dad's belongings. I knew he had one Tornek-Rayville TR900 watch in his stuff. Well, I found 2 more! So now I have 3 of them. I also found 2 Rolex dive watches. I am still going through his items. My dad was in the Navy and did 9 tours in Vietnam, so i know the history and have some picture of him wearing them. I am possibly looking to sell them, but don't even know where to start. Any advice? Please and Thank you!

The huge crown guards of Lumionor and wide lugs up to 24mm (or even 26mm)?
I know about Radomir 1940 case, which I quite like, but they do not seem be the popular PAMs.
Then, huge, oversized buckles attached to the straps.. yuck!
All of this together is way out of the balance.

And PAMs usually are big watches, 44, 45 or 47mm, but not everyone is Sly or Arnold. I've seen many WRUW where people been wearing watches just too big for their wrists. People tends to explain it with "it is PAM so it has to be big".

In overall, PAM makes a "tick" in mamy boxes which I affiliate with a bad taste.

None of this appears to be pretentious to me. They are not for everyone certainly (no watch or brand is) and personal tastes are...personal.

For me they are anything but pretentious.
