Definitely try to make it to Luger's. A colleague and I go once a year and order the steak for 4, then we collapse. No salad, no bacon, no sides - just the steak. Living in Chicago and working in client service we both frequent a lot of steakhouses, my colleague even has a steak blog - Luger's is number 1. I had to look through my phone to find this pic, it was taken 1/22/2015 which means I am 3 days late for my annual visit....馃槻
Living in Chicago I'm sure you're familiar with Gene and Georgetii's. It ain't too shabby but it ain't Peter Luger's 馃槈

While driving the Road to Hana (which was a blast)

Best scenery I've EVER witnessed. Got some killer pics going to and from.

This definitely falls under the guilty pleasure category...in the bottom of the dish is a cup or so of cooked white rice, then on top of that a couple of hamburger patties, then saut茅ed onions, brown gravy, and topped with 3 fried eggs. It was delicious, but certainly not anything I will make a habit of eating!

That wasn't at Sato's, was it? If so, your friend gave you some great insider information.

I will say we enjoyed the food we had in Hawaii, and if anyone is wondering, no I didn't eat any Spam while I was there, but it was available all over the place!l

Funny seeing a Spam McMuffin on fast food signs, eh?

Not sure if you have spent time on the Big Island, but the scenery there is far better than Maui IMO. Not being a "lay on the beach" type I felt a bit suffocated in Maui to be honest, in particular after being on the Big Island the week prior. Road to Hana was kind of the saving grace for us for Maui. Did you drive it yourself or take a tour bus? For us 1/2 the fun of that road is actually driving it, so no tour bus for us. In fact we drove it more than once, heading back on it to specifically hike the bamboo forest the day after we did the whole thing to Hana and back. Bamboo forest hike was the best one on Maui IMO.

No, it was a place in Wailea, but I can't recall the name. We had very good local information actually, both from my friend Jeremy (who has lived on the islands his whole life) and from the couple that hosted us at the Airbnb place.

Driving the road to Hana and the bamboo forest are great. You photos also reminded me how fresh the food is there. With the cold weather we've been having, Hawaii sounds nice right now.

Laying on the beach is kind of our thing. Just different perspectives I guess. I've been to O'ahu (H1 reminded me of the Schuylkill Expressway 馃槨 ) and Maui but never the big island. We'll have to check it out next time we go to visit my wife's family. Last time we vacationed with her sister's family, we flew them in to Florida.

We did drive the Hana Highway in a convertible Mustang so we didn't miss a thing. 馃憤

I had to wander out in the storm today. If you're watching golf today, you know it's not pretty.

Stumbled into a just-opened ramen shop. Noodles plus broth on a rainy day. Mmmmm. Glad this place arrived.

Travel beater due to the conditions.

I have to say "I'm a fan" of the reverse sear method of grilling to get a perfectly cooked cut of meat all the way through.

To do it, set up to cook over indirect heat at 225F until you are within 5F of the desired internal temp, pull it off and crank the grill to 550F and the sear a couple of minutes on each side. Google Finney Method if you need to read more.

Last night was coffee & ancho chili dry rubbed tenderloin.

Being a butcher by trade years ago I would never go this method on chicken or pork due to the chance of under cooking. But beef , lamb and any red meat馃憤馃憤
