Is it just a matter of the year made? What should or shouldn't be looked out for in regards to references? Maybe a reference deciphering education is in order??

Thank you, I figured it out.. it was a complete brain fart on my part, a simple look at the bezel was a give away.. one was a standard EP and the other is a striking 10th.

 

My 3 El Primeros. Love them all. A 40mm, 38mm and a 42mm. Enjoy !

 

I tried them on at zenith today (the 38 and 42). It'as very hard to chose between those two. The 38 looks more like a vintage size and fits the wrist perfectly. The 42 is very nice but flat and looks rather large on an average wrist. As it will probably be my next purchase, doooh! what to chose. I also tried on the Defy titanium. Killer watch.

 

What did you think about the weight in regards to the titanium? Really cool watch, but legibility would be my main concern.

It's really lightweight. This watch is so awesome that the legibility does not matter to me
I was about to buy an El primero but when I tried on the defy I really had a crush... harsh choice.

 

I was told that the modern El Primeros movements are quite a pain in the ass.... a friend who had it; bought it brand new and had ti send it back to Zenith for servicing 2-3x in 6 months.

 

I own 3 moderns and have never had any issues at all.

 

my friend probably bought an iffy one then.

 

My 3 have been nothing short of exceptional. My friend has 2 also and he has never had an issue either. Stinks for your buddy though.

All awesome watches! Curious since you own a couple, do the overlapping subdials bother you at all vs their updated ones with the 12hr counter subset so that sec and min are better visible?

 

None of that subdial stuff bothers me, not even all that discussion about the new Carrelli being too close together making me crosseyed. I love the EP movement, it is really is that good. I love looking at all the old Zeniths, heck, I bought Rosslers book just to look at pics! LOL. As far as the new Zeniths go, I don't use them as intended from 1969. If I need to time something I use my iPhone, I mean really? It's 2019. BUT I occasionally push the pushers just to feel clicks... because it's fun. Nutty, I know. The Zeniths do wear well and are exceptionally comfortable. When I consider buying a watch (NOT that I'm right, it's just my thought pattern) I first look at aesthetics (I must love the way it looks or why bother), then brand (reputation, quality, reliability, etc), then I look at if I like (like, trust, etc.) the movement. Then (if its a used watch) condition. Condition must be up there. Everyone has their own methodology, but this is mine. All things must check out for me to buy. Zeniths are great watches, accurate, well timed, and well built. However, most of the new models lose me on aesthetics so I'm out on them, not to say they aren't good watches, but the new designs don't appeal to me. The "open hearts" are ugly to me. I've never liked Defy aesthetics either, even though I accept it's a good watch. In the new Zeniths, I like the ones that look like the old ones. But, then I've always been a little backwards! just my .02 worth.

 

Hey, as long as you have a method to the madness! It doesn’t really bother me either just wanted to hear your opinion. I assume they changed them for a reason but like you said, it’s not like chronos are being used these days the same ways they were intended at inception. I personally use for grilling the most.

I do agree with aesthetics being up there as we first and foremost stare/drool at our watches all day. An iconic movement stands the test of time as we have seen through numerous brands.
