The only advice I've ever received in my whole life is from Coach Kelly in high school, who had me time the cross country practices.

Mechanical stopwatch of course back then, but he told me to hold it tight and push as fast as I could to make sure it was accurate.

Looking at my premoon speedie this morning and thinking back to last weekend when I found a Invicta chrono at a yard sale. I was testing the pushers and realize that may not be the best advice.

What is the proper way to use a Chrono pusher?

Slow and steady, or quick and firm?

Personally, I like to do slow, firm, and steadily quick :)

I push it like I'm focusing a camera: press lightly till the point right before it engages, and then follow through when I want to start.

OK, so its night at the improv on OF. ::rimshot::

Sigh...At first I thought, seriously..SaltNPepa? Then I thought...ah hell I haven't heard this in 20 years...so I clicked. Then I start bouncing in the chair, then the volume creeps up, then the walls start shaking, then well...I forgot what I was doing here.

I'm thinking of it now like a pistol trigger..take up the slack and squeeze, don't jerk. I just don't know if that can translate to a watch.

I would think slow could be just as risky to the movement as a fast jerk. Maybe I'm overthinking (the curse of an engineer), but I can't help imagining the movement at a certain speed where the mechanical parts just move well together. Too slow could jam, too fast could bend or break.

Or are they designed with a buffer of some sort to prevent damage?

    Ok, discuss...

I'm sure the watch experts will jump in soon, so let's give them some more info, which watch exactly are you referring to? I'd imagine a nice back-and-forth on the merits of Column wheel v/s Cam based chronos, engineering tolerances, the odd witticism etc

Till then, how about we push it real good? :p

Unless you're in the business of using one of these.......

It doesn't really matter how you push the button.

Your eggs will be just fine.

Lets say it doesn't matter. The average Joe doesn't know how a chronograph works, or what the parts are, so its really just a general question.

My Father in Law has a Heuer stopwatch I was playing around with a few weeks ago. So it applies there too, not just watches. They both have the same function of measuring time..I should think the correct method would apply in either instance.

OK, so I'm on my 4th play of that stupid video...curse you blufinz!

Tempted to make a 'T-Rex tiny stubby arms' joke, but I'll go for sending Wooster over to you to help with your predicament. Valets, how would we ever put on trousers without them? :p

...in which case, the title to this thread could be, 'what is the correct way to stroke a cat'?
