What if GoldenEye did not happen

If the film GoldenEye hadn't come along in 1995, where do you think Omega would be today compared to other brands? Would just the fame of the Speedmaster been enough to where it is today?

How popular would have the SMP300 been without a placement in a popular film and franchise?

Would've worked out fine. The Seamaster will always be a strong value competitor to the Submariner. It'd probably be less corny too as it wouldn't have as many 007 branded LEs.

To many LEs with 007. I think the Seamaster would have never gained as much popularity and the Speedmaster would be its shining star.

Also makes me wonder if then the Daniel Craig ambassadorship and subsequently new era of Bond/Omega would have taken place if the Golden Eye deal didn't happen.

Namely the 1st generation PO would have launched (either as soon as it did, launch at all, or to such success). I know a big part of me adding one to my collection had to have been how awesome it looked on his wrist in Casino Royale.

On this note does anyone know if it's true about the rumour as to why they switched from Rolex to Omega I always wondered about that myth that Rolex apparently refused to supply the watches free to the production and Omega gladly offered to hence the switch? I saw in a docu about Goldeneye tho they wanted something modern to mark the cold war end thing also so may be B/S

If I remember correctly I think it was a costume designer who decided on the move to Omega as Rolex had become a bit flash for Mr Bond ,& she wanted a return to something a naval officer would have worn in real life . And Omega Seamaster was the best choice so she approached them.Obviously not saying this is gospel as about 25 years have gone by since Omega become the choice of James.

Good question. I know for me, Golden Eye came out when I was still in high school. I knew very little about watches. My father had given me an automatic Seiko 5, and the kinetic/solar war between titans of the time Seiko and Citizen had just taken off. Had it not been for Bond, I would have never checked-out Omega. For me, the Seamaster was the first Omega of which I took notice, and the Speedmaster came later.

I just remember the line from Casino Royale, where Jimmy and Vesper were in the train talking, and she talks about how fancy he is, wearing a Rolex, she asks. No, Omega, he replies. It's the first time I can think of where they verbally promote the brand placement. Methinks that cost Omega a lot of money, more than just a few prop watches.

Probably one of my favorite Bond films as well.

Way ahead of its time and actually extended the life of the N64 by a whole year purely based on sales of this title. Also the same director (movie) as the best modern Bond imo, Casino Royale

Gruen, Breitling, and TAG Heuer were also used in the JB franchise.

I believe the costume/wardrobe designer for the film wanted to pay homage to the fact that Royal Navy divers were issued Seamasters in the 60s?

That bit does make me want to throw up... Such blatant product placement....

If Goldeneye didnt happen, Casino Royale might still have happened.

But i agree with premise though. I was attracted as a kid to the seamaster because of Goldeneye et al.

Goldeneye was my James Bond movie growing up and I can't tell you how much time I spent playing Goldeneye on the N64.... My first and still favorite Omega is my SMP 300, so I might be a little bias here.... but I think Goldeneye marks the rebirth of the brand in the 90s...
