I'm new to the forum and my confusion about my own watch configuration is being sorted in the vintage forum. Prior to joining I was trying to sort out the wheat from the chaff via the internet 24/7 and in the process came across practices that aren't clear to me. People selling older watches (20 years and older type) mostly seem have no box or paperwork and this doesn't seem to be a real impediment. A few have all the paperwork and box which excites a little interest and then others separate the components selling the box and documents separately from the bracelet and the watch bare is sold separately again.

It seems that IF the seller disposes of everything then the sum of the parts is more than the whole which is to the sellers advantage. I suppose my underlying question is, is there really a market for boxes and paperwork? I can get the hardware side. I'm not in the business and have nothing to sell but the question has been bugging me for a few weeks now. Is this really something people want or is it just a seller putting toes in the market for what seems to be astronomical prices.

Rare Vintage Omega Speedmaster Cal 861 Box & Books Rare Vintage Omega Speedmaster Box & Books cal 861
$500

Things are quiet, more digging shows others have asked similar questions on here over time. The two ads above are local to me and show what started me asking the question. A bit more digging sees the exact same box and papers go for between $50 and $500 as an example, so answering my own question that sellers have quite a margin of difference in how they value the same item. Personally if the box wasn't the one that came with my watch then I couldn't see the point but clearly there are many others with different views going on the number of these orphan boxes being peddled around,

I bought an Omega Seamaster 600 in a shop (there were no "OBs" "ADs") in 1964 when on leave from my ship.

The lovely lady serving me asked if I wanted the box and the papers....."No thanks luv, I'll just wear it now, you can keep all that".

These days, some owners of vintage watches want the "full set", so canny people are snagging old boxes and papers and creating a new market for "box and papers".

I collect watches, not packaging.

The only exceptions are when I buy a complete, authenticated set.

Cobbling together a "complete set" from stuff on eBay etc seems a bit silly to me.
