Hello friends, Can somebody tell me something about this watch? Thank you so much!!!!! Is it legit? What movement is inside? How much gold is part of the watch- of course this is not a big question but good to know Thank you !!!!
I know @Tom Dick is one of the local experts on these. I think it should have a cal 1510 movement inside, these run really accurately, but can be tricky to repair if they need it. Also, these dials are often cracked, and so check very carefully for hairline cracks. No idea about the gold. I am sure someone with more knowledge will weigh in, in good time.
This is a solid gold version of the so called stardust Mega quartz The caliber is 1510 and they allegedly made 1000 of these and it is essentially the same circuitry as the marine chronometer 1511 and 1516 So the watch is capable of accuracy of less than 1 sec per month The movement number serial number is irrelevant in this model as the circuits are often changed if defects arise It was issued in 1972 and there are lots of catalogs of that time featuring this model It has quick change settings and the button on the side is used to regulate time exactly...the first time seconds were ever needed to be set It differs from the regular Stardust in that the minute markers are in gold I believe the gold weight was a little over 200 gms but that’s not really relevant The main problem is that the adventurine Dial is subject to cracking...in fact it’s the lacquer on the Dial which is the problem and the lettering can slip on the Dial face They can still be repaired the battery life can be poor and they are not thermoregulated so the watch will slow dramatically in the cold I have sent you a photo of mine on a strap What is the history of yours
Search current for sale listings or sold ones What is it being offered for ? That will tell you what this one is worth. Watches like this you have to do your own research as not a common traded or collected watch. (Do know the gold content with bracelet was a fair bit on a write up by someone here done a few years ago)
It’s been up and down in price they used to go for £14k plus but they went out of favour a bit I think The gold value is less than £4500 so it’s all about the watch and whether you are prepared to pay the premium over a regular stardust which goes for about £3000-3500 so £8000 might be ball park and over £ 10,000 is probably a bit strong ..sorry can’t get a closer figure but they are rarely traded so price is a difficult one I am authoring a mega quartz site with Tom Dick who’s very well known as a specialist on this model and I will ask if he’s seen more recent sales It’s possibly worth looking at it’s performance on a machine as the cost of a new interior circuit is in the order of £1000 so it needs to be running right and definitely check the dial in bright light as the crack are hairline and that drops the price by a lot
I would definitely buy it for £9000 if all the visuals check out but I am a collector of this model so for me it’s an important piece so if you find another at this price i would be delighted to buy Best wishes
This is the frontispiece of the new site ...it’s in editing at the moment so it’s going to take about 2 weeks to post
On the pricing ...my coauthor Tom Dick is saying I am being a bit harsh ...he thinks you can go higher without it being in the red Over £10-k is really ok maybe as much as £13000,plus if very excellent
@TsoloT you’re too kind. I’m happy to support anyones good work highlighting these remarkable Watches and you’re welcome to use the info I have and what I’ve already published. It’s time these rare and important models had the profile they rightly deserve. These are collectors watches and prices will be dictated by the desire. The last few examples sold have hit between £9 and £10K for 18K, I know of one in the USA that exchanged hands for £12K very recently. I think £6-9K for one on shark/ leather, £9-12K on bct and £12K+ for perfect, and serviced with box and papers could add another £1K+. Also don’t forget that they made 1000 of these with around 200 in solid gold so they are very few and far betweeen. That’s about where the market is at right now but remember these watches do fluctuate in value a lot. At the height of 2010/11 an SS stardust was £3K+, they dropped down to sub £2K and are now back at around £2.5 - £3K. For me these are the most important omegas of the 20th century but my opinion is my opinion and all on here will have their own. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The OP’s example looks like a very nice one with good case, bct and dial. STS really are the masters on these so you might want to ask them for an opinion.
Beautiful watch! One thing to keep in mind is that the links are hollow and very prone to stretching so you could ask for a horizontal picture with the watch held by the clasp.
I get the watch!! When I see the Stardust Dial, immediatley I felt in love and give all the Euro paper to the seller I took out the battery because I want to wear the watch not very often. It is a piece of history. I think it is a good idea to took aout the battery, or not?
