Were these watch designers actually paid to render this sh*t?

If you want a much nicer watch with even better functionality, the GO PanoRetroGraph is it. An up to 30 minute countdown timer, with a chime at the end to signal the end of the timing. And it's not ugly...

Only problem is it was made in small volumes - released back in 2000. Truly a grail watch...
Whoa, that is super cool! It's wildly out of my price range, but thanks for adding something new to my grail wishlist. 😀

I'm sure the Yachtmaster II is functional for what it is designed for, but I doubt most of those who have one actually use it for that. Just like most folks with a dive watch don't dive, and many with a chronograph rarely, if ever, use that complication.
I have a few friends who sail, and one of them gobbles up yachting race models like there is no tomorrow. I don't know if he actually uses the function at race starts, though 😀

Are we discussing this thing?

Or this thing?
The first one looks just like a conventional Rollex, to me atleast. The second is a tad more busy, is that a regatta starting count down thingy?

I bought my Yacht-master not only because I liked the platinum bezel and frosty dial, but also because I found the Submariner and similar black dial Rolexes rather commonplace. Not the original designer's fault, but they have been copied by so many other makers that they did not appeal any more.

The same thing happened to gold Day-date Rolexes decades ago. They were regarded as the grail watch back in the 1970s and 80s by CEOs, nightclub owners and car salesmen, but then went off the boil when so many look-a-likes appeared.

I still think Rolexes a great watches, though the later versions of the Yacht-master leave me cold.

They say that art and design reflect the era and culture that produced them. Is it a prerequisite to be on a cocaine binge when coming up with this? Do these folks have even a rudimentary conception of balance, symmetry, aesthetics? Do these make you want to admire you wrist, and note the passage of time in an elegant, refined way…or drive your Lambo into a lamp post?

The people who like the style of any one of these watches, has the money to buy the one of his choice because he likes it, doesn’t care a rat’s a$$ whether the rest of us like them or not. Think Liberace or Elton John who also favour styles most of us don’t like! They’re laughing all the way to the bank!

I don’t have the money to buy one, and I don’t give a rat’s ass if they don’t care if I don’t like them. Money, as is abundantly clear, doesn’t buy refined taste, an eye for aesthetics, or design appreciation.

Let’s agree to disagree!

Another day, another cloud to yell at… Your “appreciation for design”, “eye for aesthetics”, and “refined taste” are not the standards for which the rest of the world should follow, and honestly, the world is much more exciting for it.

What part do you disagree with?

1) That I don’t have the money to buy one?
2) That I don’t give a rats ass if they don’t care if I don’t like them?
or, 3) that money doesn’t buy refined taste, an eye for aesthetics, or design appreciation?

But I’m still entitled to an opinion, as are you.

I see stuff on here every day that I don’t like. So much so that if I were to choose to offer a negative opinion, my post count would be twice what it is at present. Is it really worthy of comment when you see stuff you don’t like?

Yes. Because I had hoped it would engender conversation about watch design, both the pros and the cons, what people like, what they don’t, and why.

Is it your perspective that only things we like should be discussed on the Forum?

Most certainly NOT! That is precisely why I refrain from offering negative opinions to stuff I don’t like! This forum allows for members to celebrate the stuff they like!

These things are as hideous as anything Invicta could produce, but offcourse the brand name and pricetag makes then as classy as Liberace and Elton John! 😀😀😀😀. Keep yelling at clouds M`Bob, I am right beside you!

I think the problem with most of the watches shown, is that the dials are too busy. I don't know how they look in the flesh, only seen the yacht master, so they might work better in real life. I quite like the square one, it looks fairly readable.

Definitely! The designers have sacrificed legibility for " look at me, I am special" to stand out in a tough marked. As stated by others earlier, inovation is a good thing, but classics are classics for a reason.

Would you rather look like this;
Or like this?
