Were these watch designers actually paid to render this sh*t?

They say that art and design reflect the era and culture that produced them. Is it a prerequisite to be on a cocaine binge when coming up with this? Do these folks have even a rudimentary conception of balance, symmetry, aesthetics? Do these make you want to admire you wrist, and note the passage of time in an elegant, refined way…or drive your Lambo into a lamp post?

Don't normally go for Rolex styling, pre-Daytonas excepted, but that Yacht-master has enough funkiness to like it a lot 😎

The rest can go into the trash.

You think those are bad wait until the new Jaguars are introduced. The higher the price the stupider the design is often the case.

I wonder sometimes who buys these. Clearly, they’re designed for attention-seeking, so I’m guessing: athletes, celebrities, the new-rich, and anyone one else trying to prove to their peers that they’re important.

As opposed to;

It isn't just watches M'Bob.

Those "Body by Fisher" designers were "smokin' cigarettes and all kinds of things" back in the day!

Ford and Chrysler got in on some of it too!

I'll have what they are having, simply wonderfully 😀

I must be sick, I liked those watches too but probably not the asking price.

My brother-in-law is a comedian who is also gay. He had a standing joke that went something like "what do you mean there weren't gays in the old days?! Who do you think designed those fins on the cars?"

It's funnier when he says it, but I can't help thinking about that whenever I see the fins.

Also, we had a old dodge with fins in the 60's. I'd love to have it now.

Nope, you just have less conservative tastes than the OP.

Love the cars, always have. But the watches, as opposed to the cars, just look discordant.

Tell me what you like about them, I may learn something and look at them from a different perspective.

Those 1950s/early 1960s cars have over-the-top styling, some being plug-ugly, but any of them would be glorious to drive on a Sunday afternoon.

Those watches are too odious to wear, even to a clown convention.

Only one opinion.

Mostly their playful light hearted nature though one strong proviso is that you should be able to read the time with ease and in the case of the skeletonized ones they fail as the detail dissolves into an amorphous black unreadable blob so those one I would have a hard time liking as they have little useful function.

I’m with you except for the Exner 60s Chryslers. No thanks.

My dream car is a 1973 triple black Olds 98 Regency like my dad had briefly when I was 11-14.

In fifty years time they will be classic mid 20s design or be forgotten as many of the "new" and "disruptive" designs are. It seems like I have seen them before and they maybe arent that "special".

My money are safe in the bank thats for sure, and I am not even that " conservative", I just have a " form follows design" taste.

(ok Im conservative)

Ok, I had a chance to marinate this, and I’m going to play Devil’s Advocate with myself…

In a similar way that Modern art was introduced: these watches represent a departure from traditional watch design renderings and should be viewed as a mold-breaking, artistic expression.

However, and an important however…not all modern art was good. Some had an amazing balance of shape, depth, balance, and color; others were rightly accused of being made by a four-year old.

So, I do appreciate the impetus behind these; I’m just not sure they work, nor would I buy one.

Maybe this a little better?

If I had a Jay Leno Garage … I’d love any of these.

This is different. There’s a reason for the two dials and they’re symmetrical (all-wheel drive… sorry, reflex).

@M'Bob, that Yachtmaster II has to be one of the most ridiculous watches Rolex ever produced.
