Were the Snoopy 3 Doohickies really meant for the Apollo 8 watch?

Just a thought but bear with me on this.

As is widely known, the Apollo 13 missions was marred by an explosion which ripped the side off the CM and meant that the crew had to abort their landing. The LEM was used as a kind of lifeboat and remained attached up until reentry. While orbiting the moon, the LEM was attached at all times. The Snoopy award, instigated in 1968 is an internal NASA award made for outstanding safety contributions. It was clearly earned by many on this marred flight.

The earlier Apollo 8 mission was the first to orbit the moon and thus see the dark side. It carried no LEM since there was no intention to land on the moon. During this mission the famous earth rise picture was taken.

Back to the present. The Snoopy watch shows a CM minus LEM orbiting the moon with the Eatrh serenely rotating in the background. Not very like Apollo 13 is it?

I wonder if the idea was dreamt up for an Apollo 8 special but they decided to put it on ice and trotted it out for the Snoopy instead.

Fair point.

I guess showing the 1869 movement was key to the design idea of the 8, however the story of 8 does more closely match the back of the new Snoopy. I suppose the LEM attached to the CM with Snoopy sitting on top wouldn’t look as cool.

Yeah, i also thought the rocket should have been heading to Earth instead of orbiting around the moon. They should have kept the moon behind and earth upfront.

It's a cartoon rendition, once you put a beagle in a space suit your ties to reality are out the window.

I’m still confused that the same crowd that wants the 321 are applauding the new 3861 and don’t want the 1861 that has nothing wrong with it.

But the 321 is too expensive
The 3861 is worth the extra $2500
The 1861 is frowned upon, yet it is used in so many LEs that everyone wants.
And the 861 doesn’t even get talked about.

Aaaahhh the Speedmaster

Thankfully, as then they would no longer be able to be found for roughly the price difference between the 1861 and 3861 ... (look away chaps, nothing to be seen here, the 3861 and new watches are great investments...have at it...) ... 😗

I’m a big fan of the new movement, having said that I wouldn’t discriminate against any speedie I like purely based on the movement, all speedmaster manual movements are very decent imo.

Good point. I'm returning mine.

Maybe, but this is a “moonwatch” after all... not an earth watch 😜

To be fair, I think a lot of different "groups" are being conflated into a single crowd here. A lot of the people who see the 321 as too expensive also see the 3861 as a marketing gimmick, etc.

I've yet to have anybody successfully explain to me what makes the 321 movement so great, besides marketing.

The reasons why it got to where it did (where all the others didnt, because they were inferior) long before the marketing.

Curious to know why is the 1861 and I presume the 1863 is frowned upon?

Not really frowned upon but everyone was jumping on the 321 train awhile back and now everyone is hoping for the 3861 to replace the 1861 in the standard Moon watch

Probably 30% want the old 321 in everything and 30% want the 3861 in all new models and I’m in the 40% that don’t care really.

The 3861 in the 50th LE and Snoopy 3 now have put the Speedmaster LEs out of my price bracket. Glad I got the two Speedy Tuesday’s at the price they were with the 1861.

Just seems you have certain followers of 3 movements now compared to 5-10 years ago it was 1861 only 😉

You should consider snagging a 60th whilst they are still well priced 😉 Can walz around the outback like Lord Nelson of Knightsbridge 😝

Interesting observation. Made me look for past threads and read this:

https://omegaforums.net/threads/the-new-3861-movement.91465/page-4

As a newbie (joined this year) i tend to be all over the place. "Moonwatch is awesome"; "A column wheel is smoother? I want one."; "861? Cheaper but just as good? I want one."; "Omega is innovative with a co-axial? I want one."

(It's a wee bit disturbing to know that there's a pattern to watch collecting and that you are following the pattern and not unique.)

Anyway, my one observation and comment is that perhaps there are not distinct camps or lines drawn on the different movements. While there may be a growth pattern to watch collecting, people still bring their different perspectives and values to the forum, which means a lot of interesting comments. Most threads are conversations between enthusiasts brainstorming and working through their thoughts, like "have you considered this?" This is the fun and interesting part. Unfortunately at times, it seems that people may feel they need to defend their opinion when faced with a different perspective and the lines are drawn and folks feel they are backed into taking a hard position.

I'd like to think that there is more consensus than it may seem. It ultimately comes down to personal choice. There isn't a right or wrong about whether the speedmaster should be a 321 or 3861. (Uh oh, did I just blow myself up?)

Maybe i will feel differently in a few years. I do see my interests in watches and collecting getting more focused and evolving in different directions. Perhaps others with stronger feelings about the different movements are simply more mature collectors and have more refined opinions.

Rambling again. To wind up, we probably shouldn't be surprised with changing opinions or differences in opinions. I kindof enjoy it and want more, just so long as it remains a conversation amongst friends.

Love the 60th but they've been steaming upwards of late. There's been a few recently at or above USD 7500.00, which is getting close to the new Snoopy.
