I learned (yesterday) that the "Seiko Shake" is most likely the "Seiko Gentle Swoosh"...I think I've been doing it incorrectly for 28 years (too hard)...no problems during that time...but now after my Seiko 6309's first servicing (in 28 years), I believe I caused oil to splash on the hairspring (again)...it gains about 10 seconds per minute (again). It was running great 2 days ago when I received it back from the watchmaker...it was running great until I did the "Seiko Shake" yesterday. I conducted multiple time resets yesterday and today...same deal...it goes Mach 2...and gains about 10 seconds per minute...continuously. So I learned that it's not a shipping problem, it's a Mad Dog problem...the learning curve is steep for the Mad Dog. 馃檨

I think there's more than a full sump problem there Collin.

I've had a few Seikos that I've serviced according to the OEM charts and never had an oil splash issue. I also give them a shake in various positions (nothing too vigorous) when I finish to check for loose hands/rattles etc and never had issues.

I also use the "fan away the blowies" to kick start my Seikos.

@flyingout...OK...what is the correct pronunciation? My wee little brain has been saying "glass shoot" to itself since initially being exposed to the name "Glash眉tte" a few months ago at OF. Should I be happy that my big fat pie hole has not uttered "glass shoot"? 馃榿

I listened to the HourTime podcast while walking today and though I knew where the Ah Long-ey unt Zunna (or whatever) watches were made, it took a mental double take before I figured it out.

Pronunciation is a weird little thing. Being from the U.S., I'm sure my pronunciation of foreign names are not precise. PA-dik Fuh-LEEP, Gluh-SHOO-duh, JAY-ger luh-KUL-truh...
Sometimes it just seems pretentious to whip out the old world country pronunciation of stuff. If a fellow American talks to me about la-tour-eee-FELL in pah-REE instead of the EYE-full Tower in PAIR-iss, I think he's being a DOOSH-bag.

I pronounce it Jay-Ger Leh Coal-trae.

Anyone who cares enough to correct me is politely ignored, including boutique salesfolk. ::stirthepot::

Even size 16s (fairly large) pocket watch escape wheel pivots are really small and break really easily. 馃槨

Since I have two of them now, I guess it was about time to learn this one:

Might come in handy one day while in Paw-REE, or Gen-EEEv!

I don't think anyone knows how to pronounce that one. That has a much harder G than the zhay-zhair version I've heard was the Swiss way. Is that a France vs. Switzerland difference perhaps?

As to the language question, Spanish and some Bahasa Malaysia here. Though lack of practice has taken it's toll. As for Asshole, I've studied and worked in New York; never could pick that one up.

...The Swiss speak a number of different languages, both French, German and, to some extent, Italian. Jaeger is (originally) a German name and should (IMO) be pronounced as such. LeCoultre is French and should be pronounced that way. The pronouncation Archer heard was said by, I'd guess, French speaking Swiss.

When watching American TV or movies, I always notice how names are Anglified; the German name "Vogel" (litterally "Bird" and pronounced "Fogel") becomes "Wogel" and so on... "Oh-mee-gah" is an ever toe-curlingly embarrasment.

Oh, and what did I learn today?

That I've, apparently, won the monthly watch-draw on Ablogtowatch.com!
This one should be coming my way soon:

Torgoen-T81-Limited-July-Giveaway.jpg

Pretty surprised by that... I have never worn a watch that large, so really looking forward to the experience!!

Do not work on watches (or anything that requires extremely fine motor skills) after downing 48oz. of coffee.

This evening I've learned that it is impossible to peruse this forum and not find 3-5 new watches to add to "The List". Currently looking for 321 Speedys but after reading the posts about YG/WG IWC cal89's........there went the last hour. How am I ever going to be able to pretend to be an astronaut with all of this temptation!?!?

Just in case anyone trusted this video, this is NOT the correct pronunciation of "Glash眉tte".
Unfortunately I am lacking the ability to transfer the "眉" correctly to an english equivalent.
