    Why do watchmakers mark the inside of casebacks . And what do the markings stand for or mean . NN was here ? Could anybody have done them ?

    I was curious also. I imagine it validates the watch was serviced.

    It is a code either from the shop, the specific watchmaker, or issued by a watchmaker's organization. The code could be something as simple as the job number of the business, it could be the date the watch was last worked on with the watchmaker's initials. They are not standardized for the most part.

    It's away of tracking who did what to the watch, and it's for the protection of the watchmaker.

    BTW the old scratching method is frowned upon by most modern watchmakers - it's considered damaging the customer's property.
