Watches rediscovered

A few weeks ago (maybe a “lockdown” effect of spending much more time at home?)I felt I needed to clear space in my cupboards- and that included selling a few watches.

In doing so I also “rediscovered” some watches I owned but was not wearing, and I now have been enjoying this one.

Share yours if you’ve ever experienced the same!

What is it?

There have been a number of threads recently, discussing Disco Volante style watches. Has this one been posted before, it certainly is of the same ilk. Was the term Disco Volante used more by one maker rather than a generally applied style name? Was it Alfa Romeo the car maker that used it? Use the search feature to see other threads on disco volante watches.

Most of the watches I have shown hereabouts recently, fit into the “rediscovered” category. So no need to show them again.

It’s clearly a 1930s styled watch with art deco dial design and Breguet blued hands, a movement and case signed “Majex” which was a jeweler in the UK (based on documentation @bubba48 posted in another forum).

The movement is also marked “EW9”- which could either mean “Era watch” (later to become Edox), or European Watch Co- in both cases several people have identified it as based on a FHF (Fabrique d’Horlogerie de Fontainemelon) ebauche.

Great watch @Syrte . This outdoorsman stayed on my wrist for over a week recently. I have another more military style which I wore more. I really bonded with it.

I haven’t seen those “disco volante” threads or posted in them but I’m under the impression this is a name which like many in the vintage watch world is a nick name coined by Italian collectors- as it means flying disc.
Why would a car maker use it for a watch?

Edit/ add- posts crossed, I wasn’t aware of a car- I would assume the idea of flying discs became a fashionable idea in the 50s with UFO movies.

The style Disco Volante (see contribution by @Peemacgee ) was applied to a car by Alfa Romeo. What is it in my wording that caused you to think I meant that they applied the name to a watch?

If you check out the archives, you will see that the style of your watch was popular among several designers and makers.

The term was certainly used by more than one maker. my Lanco as an example

At the risk of thread drift - they also did extraordinary ‘BAT’ cars

.
Simply because I had no idea Alfa Romeo could call a
Car a disco volante. A flying disk is a flying saucer.

it was because of the shape of the cross-section - and the fact that it was somewhat rounded at the front and back (but in no way way was it a saucer)

Well, they did! And Disco Volante watches were no more a flying saucer than the car is.

Unless you are checking the time while crossing against a light and get T-boned by an Alfa Romero.

The Stealthy two part hydroplane yacht used by the villain in Thunderball went by that name.

A Lathin chronograph good size for a vintage chronograph should wear it more often got it cheap in the old days think 300 bucks got a few other odd ball chronographs also in the box mite post them later just ones you forget about just because you don't wear them enough. Even though it's a brand no one hears about I liked it by the way it looks just wonder way you forget about stuff you buy through the years of collecting. The dial looks as good as the day it was made.

Finally found a bracelet that works with this one. I liked it on leather but it seemed a little too dressy- I think this “sports” it up a bit
