Watches lost to shipping

I've never had any problems with USPS when sending high valued shipments. A little slow at times, but ultimately reliable. But I haven't shipped anything during the pandemic hysteria which seems to be affecting everything to some extent. It's a convenient excuse for degraded standards and service, imo. Although life goes on I would try to avoid or delay shipping until we get back to normal (post election, post vaccine). And these delays and losses seem to be somewhat regional.

Just an update on the watch I sold the OP: As I said, I started an inquiry last week. Low and behold, it started moving through the system, once again. It's in the right country so it should arrive later this week.

Glad our watches are getting more of a tour of the world than we are these days at least 🙄

Why do people still ship watches through USPS?? 🤦

For my area there are no ups or FedEx locations. There are mom and pop mailbox places where your outgoing FedEx or ups package sits right inside the door all day waiting for pickup, and you don’t get any proof of drop off. There is a post office and while usps can be a bit slow sometimes, never had something lost.

I bought a watch from @MoclovFlop at the end of March, shipped via USPS from Calif. to UK.
It arrived last week, after nearly 5 months, and long after I had given up on it.

Post Office has lost two watches i had purchased from OF members in the past few months.
Insure and choose a good shipping company, spend the extra few $, it's not worth the risk.
Didn’t realise it was such a problem unless you’ve been incredibly unlucky to have lost 2 watches!

I always use fedex. I noticed it's the only one my dealers use.

While we were in the Philippines we always used Fedex and nothing else for both incoming and outgoing stuff. Costs more but never a problem. Here in USA we have been using USPS but if it gets any slower we might switch back to Fedex since we rarely ship anything ultra valuable.

USPS has become so bad here. I am moving in two weeks and have been shipping all DOMESTIC purchases that use USPS to a friends house, because I can't be sure they will get to me in that time frame.

Yea probably a smart thing. Hopefully after the election things will begin heading back to normal.

I think that many of us are waiting to hear about the favorable outcome of a claim with Secursus. So far, we have only heard about people paying them for insurance, and the only claim we heard about was determined to be fraudulent by Secursus, but even that situation revealed that Secursus has some pretty onerous requirements. And still no actual data on how they will handle a legit claim.

There was no other way that I was able to post my watch within the UK with enough cover (£5k). I can’t remember specifics but I tried all the usual suspects but for one reason or another they couldn’t cover the value of my watch. Secursus gave me some piece of mind. It was recommended to me on OF and I was told an OF member owns the business. Not that I think that legitimises it. Would love to hear how others post/insure high value watches within the UK.

So no claims to report. Just wondering.

Not for a watch, but I have done a 300 mile round trip within England to sell a high-value item. The peace of mind was worth it, plus I spent a very pleasant hour in the buyer's company and made a good contact.

Scotland to Cornwall, now that might be different.

The toughest thing about buying a watch that is shipped by FedEx (with a required delivery signature) is sneaking out of the house and meeting the FedEx truck at the end of the driveway so that the wife doesn't find out you bought yet another watch. 😀

Went to Fedex last week and they wouldn't let me insure a watch for anything over $1000. I'm not sure if this a new rule or you need to have a Fedex account to insure over 1k.

I thought it was actually $500, but maybe that is for international shipping.

Just royal mail special delivery. Recommended by most dealers or watchmakers that is accepting watches for service

Had a watch delivered in 5 days from Florida to Seattle with no problem.

I returned a GP buckle to Germany, stupidly I did not tell Ebay ( I should have gone through their process) .
I also neglected to register the small package, more fool me. A ridiculous oversight on my part.
It apparently never arrived.
I left myself wide open for that to happen.
Beware some sellers will take advantage of a situation.
