Meh. That watch is "near-mint" relative to some vintage Ferrari barn finds that have sold for stupid money!

😁

It's sooo tempting to bid for something so beat up.. but do I fancy experiencing some finger burning having sunk circa £4K and another few grand to make it good..

The dial side will likely haves some rusty parts, based on the condition of the stem and the setting lever screw...

Hopefully the sliding and winding pinions are good, as they are discontinued.

I hate to see the wrists wearing these
When is a vintage watch past saving, much like cars, value of watch vs making it good.. This watch is coming up in an auction, auctioneers estimate £1000 - £2000.. It seems like it has lived an interesting life.. Used and abused and coming up for a breath of air..

Hammer price £2800.00.

You mean they run the mower over them.. FFS they survived going into space and doing spacey things..
The '64 has definitely been thoroughly used. The third party crystal is awful and the bezel looks like my dog chewed it but it tells the time and the chronograph works...don't know why they hadn't reset the hours hand...I had that down on this list of things likely wrong with it! Some quick photos below out of the box: -

Hi @dougal74 !

Nice that you got the watch, but why not start a new post/thread on your watch and the adventure/coming adventures with it?
This post has been mixed up a lot...😁

Cheers!

What happened to the top pusher, did someone root around in their spare parts bin and stick a crown on!?

I like how the tachymetre bezel ring has fallen off and been stuck back on way out of alignment at 4 'o'clock instead of at 12 '0'clock where it should be

Isn't the the key thing, the part you can't see in the pictures? The movement? Can it be made whole again in such an undertaking for a reasonable cost?

What's a reasonable cost? I'm still trying to figure that out.

Current bid £2100, auction estimated between £3-£4k.

That is always the struggle. Without a thorough evaluation by a good watchmaker who can provide a solid repair estimate, it is a gamble. Not only in the labor, but any parts which need to be replaced. My experience (although very limited) is that usually an estimate for repair without actually seeing the item for evaluation would only provide you a cost starting point with a statement "does not include cost of parts". Also, the cost of replacement parts will of course vary depending on whether it is vintage or new. It depends on your desire for originality or even finding a suitable original replacement part.

I would think, though, that these early versions will continue to increase in value and with time could provide a good return on investment. IMHO

I don't think that you should start collecting these vintage Speedys with any financial gaining....??
