IF (and that's a personal choice) you want to follow the rules, I agree with some others here: simple, elegant watch, black strap. This would be my current tuxedo choice, 35mm ultrathin 711 movement De Ville with silver linen dial. And the beauty of modern life is you can throw the rules away if you want.

@STANDY has pretty much nailed it but just to say how much I dislike the 'look at me - I’m not like everyone else' - guests who think it’s 'cool' to wear a 'look at me' bow tie; coloured, patterned, velvet' etc, or a 'look at me' waistband or waistcoat; coloured, patterned etc.

Don’t get me started on frilly shirts!

It’s unsubtle and show-offy.

Tuxedos (or dinner jackets as we call them) and morning dress is uniform and the main thing about uniform is that we all dress the same.

After all, if you’re in the forces, you don’t get to choose and wear your favourite colours in chevrons, lanyards, medals etc.

Actually, forget what I’ve said, I’m just an old fart. Wear whatever you like.

Every word of this. (Except the last 4. Maybe 14?)

Just keep it simple, no Invictas.
I don't think there are many Invictas that will fit under the cuff of the jacket much less the shirt. Next to the 166.028 Seamaster just for comparison.

Plus IMHO they're just plain ugly

People will tell you a small three-hander on a leather strap or nothing at all are the ONLY choices, but realistically, wear what you want. At my wedding, I wore my old Seamaster GMT on a Bond-style bracelet. Last time I wore a tux at an awards ceremony, I wore my Speedmaster FOIS on a black croc strap. FWIW, at that ceremony, all the men wore tuxes and most of them were wearing Apple Watches. So I was the only one who actually “dressed up” my wrist.

Not a single person noticed or commented on either choice, but I felt great wearing each. That’s the only thing that really matters.

I have actually worn my speedy with a tux at some “informal” tux events - y’know, local fundraisers or social group black tie for New Year’s Eve ….if works surprisingly well….I would have worn it to my wedding, had I owned it the , because it is a watch with a bit of a special connection to me…and that trumps everything in my mind…..

Although I would surely secure a F- - - from @bradurani , a Speedmaster on a black croc strap would be my pick (as I don’t own a dress watch… yet)!!

I’ve worn this aventurine megaquartz with a dark blue tux, to me a really different and cool piece but still following the “rules” (maybe not thickness) but a great conversation piece as well.

this is like style and life advice all wrapped into one!

From a guy whose idea of formal dress is a Chesty Bond Blue, Stubbies shorts and thongs and either a Luminox or a Certina diver on the wrist?

🙄

Personally, a tuxedo looks greater with a square-shaped wrist watch (e.g. JLC Reverso)
During the British BAFTA movie awards ceremony, actor Richard Grant wore a white tuxedo and two wrist watches:
Right hand wrist what looked like a Cartier
Left hand wrist what looked like a Breitling chronograph
Richard Grant has one set to GMT time and one set to Swasiland time

He is a watch guy for sure. I think the Navitimer was a gift from his late father (one of them is). I guess the Cartier is from his late wife so both marking time in a very intimate and special way. He is doing a UK tour currently.

“I would wear ten on each arm if my wife wouldn’t shoot me,” Grant once explained (via the Richard E. Grant archive). “I love watches. My wife once gave me a Cartier watch, and I would love a Patek Philippe. I have a box of watches at home. It all goes back to when I was seven, and I was given a watch. My parents had been to Switzerland, and I got one as a birthday present. I will always remember the thrill of that.”

I put the Hamilton on a black strap but I reckon I could wear either of these under Tux.

I don't get to go to many tuxable events any more - mainly funerals, but this has always worked with formal attire. Slides under the shirtsleeve and you can't feel that it's there, but I love the look. Has a 26mm width so it doesn't look like a ladies watch.

At the last black tie event I attended, people just wore whatever they wanted. Saw many smart watches, sporty things on bracelets, and even a few dressy watches. I agree that something classic and slim would be the ideal aesthetic, but I think in this day and age you should wear whatever pleases you.
I wore the closest thing I had to a dressier watch (excuse the poor pic).
