I am just curious what tools/supplies the respected members would suggest for a novice watch collector. I am particularly curious about case back and crystal removal tools, strap removal tools and bracelet adjustment tools.

    So, what is everybody packin'?

Here's an easy way to open casebacks: packing tape. Ball it up with the sticky side out, push onto the caseback and twist. Just don't use it on any medallion with paint. If you buy a caseback wrench, get the 3 pronged one and take you time adjusting it til it fits perfectly in the notches.

You should get a decent springbar tool with replaceable tips. One side with the fork, one with the flat topped pin.

A digital caliper is good too. Pittsburgh tools item #47256 can be found under $20 and opens to 4", although you won't need more than 2" for watch related stuff.

Many thanks! That should give me a few more new toys to buy. :)

How about crystal removers for front loaders?

A Bergeon No. 6111 for removing and fitting spring bars is my only tool...am currently working at skill level 1 (remove and replace straps and bracelets) :D

I am trying to move from level 1 to 2. Opening casebacks. Are the 2 claws openers any good? I have got one but are hesitant to use them.

Use a three, not a two

Just so you know, the reason is a three is stable and won't slip when correctly adjusted. A two will easily slip, and when it does, you've just done your own caseback engraving.

Learn to use a 140mm flat Bergeon screwdriver, faster, easier and less dangerous.

one suggestion is buy good quality, they don't have to be the most expensive, but spend a little extra and get a better set

You must have some Scottish blood, packing tape, I agree it works but a sticky ball you can use again and again. I always try the sticky ball before the case back tool and am surprised by how often it works.

to revive an old thread.... can I get some specific tool/toolkit advice, like brand names and a place to buy? All I can find looks like cheap chinese crap (no offense meant to good chinese crap). Thanks.

I picked up this tool not long ago...used it a couple times. Seems fairly simple, but I was beside myself just changing my straps.
