My recommendation is to save your money (and your sanity), unless you are planning to use it examine watches live and in hand before purchase.

Using a loupe on watches you already own (even brand spanking new ones) is not recommended. A 10x loupe, for will magnify flaws to 10 times their normal size.

Haha good point about magnifying flaws. I do have a positive story: I used my loupe on a watch I had recently purchased from a dealer. He claimed the dial was original, but I discovered it had been touched up. I was able to return the watch. If you use the loupe with the proper expectations, I think you'll be ok.

I have one vintage omega geneve and a new speedy professional. I will be staying away from vintage for a while, I will still go to London dealers to look only and use the loupe to learn and learn by using the forum. I have learned it takes a lot of learning, even 6 months of forum and reading is not enough.

I've bought 3 or 4 amazon cheapies, for me the worst was a B&L, the UV/LED Triplet Loupe i've been very happy with if you are looking for a handheld type.

I use the one that came with my Speedmaster in the enormous box. Comes in handy for inspecting things close up that my middle-aged eyes can't focus on. It even has its own tachymeter bezel, perhaps to time how fast I can roll my eye.

I will get a basic cheap one from Amazon to start with, while I am doing homework on vintage watches.

Don't get the cheap Chinese brands loupes. They're worse than plain eyes. The B&L are not the cheapest but not too bad. You need to know your purpose in order to buy the appropriate magnification.

My purpose is if I go to a dealer to look at some watches I need a loupe to study the dial. Just a basic beginners loupe, not a watchmakers loupe for servicing etc... I have seen a Carson 8× loupe on amazon for £6. Just as a starter would you recommend that.

I haven't tried many, but the difference between the cheap no-name ones and the $35 BelOMO on Amazon was night and day. For me, it was a good buy.

Is it an eye loupe or a hand held? A portable hand held is more suitable, so go with a BelOMO 10x. It's the best value for money.
