    Hi there,

browsing the interwebs, I had just a special moment looking at a Baume et Mercier watch ...

"its really sad the state of affairs they are in" ...

what other brands do you feel have gone down over the past 2 or 3 decades?

    - Baume & (now 65% off) Mercier?
    - Eternamatic?
    - IWC (arguably)
    - Longines?
    - Glycine?
    - Ebel

    any thoughts?

The past 2 or 3 decades? Glycine definitely, they were well respected and popular especially in the 50s and 60s. The Airman became somewhat iconic. The future looks rather bleak for them as Invicta has now bought them. The 1953 Limited Edition re-issue they did a few years ago was nice but I think that will be the last.
    A 1956 Airman.

Umm. I think longines vintage seem to be going up again. The Greenlander and majetek still have value to climb up.
And all jumbo sector dial seem to be on trend.
Anyway, for modern watch I agree all your listed brand seem to be turn down like global economy.

    I own capeland, amazing watch.
I think people would kind of benefit from some big names kind of going down in prices. Watches enthusiasts could get a cool, well built watch for decent money.

I don't think Longines should be considered as "gone down". They may be a weathered Rock of Gibraltar, but it is still a stable Rock. They produce watches of high content for money. (Value) My HydroConquest keeps COSC standards time without the attendant premium usually associated with COSC certification. You cannot find another "diver" with the same specifications, durability, reputation, service, and style for less money. P1020108.JPG IMG_2224.JPG Fifty years ago, my grandfather purchased a "Swiss Watch" for himself...Longines, and I have it today. It was the best value for the money back then, too. Longines has not really changed. The only Longines I see for any length of time on the used market are the ugly ones. The best are snapped up immediately or never go to market to begin with. For every Longines in merchant inventory, there are 20 Rolex. Exclusivity, uniqueness, and inexpensive are not mutually exclusive concepts. Longines is doing just fine.

I'd say Longines lost it a bit in the late 80's but started finding their way back in the very late 90's. They could be positioned to make a nice upswing again.

Don't get me started on Bell & Ross. They fell below Hublot a year or so ago when Hublot started making their own movement.

As far as I'm concerned, Eterna and IWC still make in-house calibers and haven't lost a step. They've just adapted to the modern market a little slower than other brands.

I hate to say it, but Blancpain isn't as hot as it was 4 or 5 years ago.

    Post of the Day. :p

I'm older than Bell & Ross. I don't like that in a watch company.

Imagine if I bought one of their monstrosities. People would whisper behind my back "He's wearing a watch less than half his age!".
