People don't use actual sand anymore. Silica dust = cancer. I used to use filtered "play sand" from Home Depot to clean car parts in my backyard. Very aggressive, though. Dual purpose as it also provided top dressing for my yard. 馃榾
Many other blasting media out there. Walnut, for example. Just google "blasting media".
Yes, lots of different media available. Even dry ice pellets are used for cleaning things using a blaster.
The trick with thin metal is making sure the pressure is right - too much and it will cause the metal to curl (ask me how I know!).

Yes, that's a small machine. I'm used to it for cleaning off large machine tools - much quicker than trying to wash off dirt and grease. It's also used pretty extensively for restorations after a fire:
