Got these untouched longines elephant skin watch straps from the 80s with there original Sterling silver buckles. What's your favorite type of watch strap? I want to see them.

Most comfortable bracelet i own is this vintage NSA one. I Need to get better quality straps, cheaper ones just aren't comfortable for me.

@Nir0111

What a great looking watch. It looks a lot like a British market watch.

The strap goes very well with it - how is it fastened?

I'm surprised that Longines used elephant skin as late as the 1980s, although I have no idea when that was banned. They are beautiful and exotic straps nonetheless.

Honestly, I hate metal bracelets so all of my watches are on leather. My favorite straps tend to be just simple smooth calfskin with fine edge stitching. Although I have a few exotic bands (lizard, crocodile and alligator).

Good looking watch, that bracelet complements it quite nicely An that dial.

Adding to the menagerie, here is a strap from a horse's rear.

Agreed, I would think it’s more like the 60s or at most 70s- also from the style of the cut and the buckles.
I would think by the 80s elephants were already protected.

I don’t think it’ll make you popular at dinner parties, but ABP in Paris still makes watch straps out of Elephant leather.

I agree- those straps scream bell-bottoms and leisure suits.

Yes but they bear the seal of the export license under «CITES » - the « convention on international trade of endangered species. » There are countries such as South Africa where protected herd have become so numerous that culling has been authorized at times recently - and the hides are therefore legal.
I happen to live in Paris and to be fascinated by ABP’s incredible hides and when I asked them about their licenses the manager opened a door and went to fetch for me the piece of leather which still had the export license seal locked onto it.

At least it’s not anymore harmful to a species than if you were buying a calf strap. If you believe PETA the production of calf and cow leather is extremely cruel to those animals and also an environmental hazard as the tanning process pours lots of harmful chemicals into the environment.

PS - That doesn’t mean I would buy elephant skin either as I rather like those beasts. On the other hand hippos are nasty and murderous animals, the greatest man killer in the areas where they live, so I would have no problem with hippo skin which also has an interesting texture.

If it’s about revenge, does anyone know where I can source a mosquito leather strap? Any members in Manitoba could likely easily find a hide big enough for @Duracuir1 to make a bunch of straps out of

@Kay995 @antiqueaddiction you’re aware your purported transaction violates forum rules, right?
You need to be a contributing member with at least 200 meaningful posts to make the offer in the sales forum.
Best regards
