Thank you!

It's as much a way for me to collect together all of my thoughts in the one place as anything else. Very happy to receive constructive correction of any facts I've got wrong though.

That's rather magnificent! I never know how to describe that style. There's another one that's very similar except that the lugs are smaller / stepped down from the rest of the case.

Where does this style slot into the lineage?

No logo
Front load/special wrench required

Nice watch!

Just to be clear, my blog posts are just focussed one particular style of Ultra-Chron, the 37mm ones that have the specific design I mention in Part 1. There are loads of Ultra-Chrons! I couldn't begin to cover them all (not at this stage anyway). I think there are even one or two other 37mm "jumbo" Ultra-Chrons that have different designs to the ones I'm dealing with.

Yours is what I'd descibe as a "c-case" model. There are actually quite a few of these too... Researching all of the c-case Ultra-Chrons would be a task similar to researching the ones I've dealt with in my posts.

As I hint at in Part 1, I think one reason these watches are under appreciated is because there ARE so many styles... The Ultra-Chron isn't really a particular model or even a line (e.g. like the Rolex Datejust), it's really just the label that Longines put on all of the watches they made with the 431 36,000 bph movement (and the later ones with the 28,800 movement based on the 431).

Names are important - unfortunately most of these vintage designs don't have individual names, so it's difficult to talk about them. I'm hoping that by focussing on one particular style in my posts I'll help to create an identity for that style.

I thought their individual names are the reference number, it's the same as Omega, there are a lot of Seamasters, different cases, same as constellation, but they go by reference number to differentiate them

Also was looking for this in the articles, I think this is a C class like model of Longines

Yes, exactly! The references my articles deal with are the 7950, 7951, 7952, 8300, 8301, 8302 and 8348. All of these references share the same basic case design and together constitute a recognisable style, but the style doesn't have a name. They are all Ultra-Chrons, but most Ultra-Chrons have other case designs and other reference numbers (of which there are many).

It's a little like the "c-case" Constellations. Several references, but they all share the same case design. There are many other non-c-case Constellations though. We call then the "c-case Constellations" for lack of an "official" name.

I always wonder if designs such as this would be more popular and collectable if they had names.

they should have names, but they dont, I don't know, for example, the 8317 which i posted, also is very similar to the C-Case constellations, why dont they call it Longines C-Case? it's puzzling.

It's a c-case, but there are a few different Longines c-cases, even a couple of different Ultra-Chron ones.

There are names of models that are used by the brands themselves when they are sold, and there are informal names applied later by enthusiasts. Longines seems to largely lack any of these, which makes them difficult to approach for collectors and probably keeps the value down..

Can any of you Longines connoisseurs please help me identify my recently acquired Ultra Chron? I actually fell in love with this little guy, as it has terrific wrist presence and the silver sunburst dial is to die for! It measures 33.5mm in diameter without the Longines inscribed crown, 38mm lug-to-lug with an 18mm lug width. It’s a front loader, so I have no idea as to what’s inside and I don’t have the expertise to get in there. The case back is inscribed Stainless Steel, 15 and 232357. Anyhow, any assistance would be greatly appreciated and thanks in advance. Mike

Is the ultra-chron logo crooked, or is a distortion from the glass;
