Hi all. I picked this up yesterday at a garage sale lol. It looks to be about 30mm and came with an apparent original rolex box. I unfortunately dont have the correct case wrench to open the back but was wondering if anyone could make an approximate guess on the time period of this piece. I will absolutely post pics of the movement when i get it open. Cool little watch thats keeping very good time.

Also noticed something funky with the crown..

Tudor 4820 Gerald, 17 jewel.

$42.50 Canadian in the late 40s, so I hope you didn’t overpay!

I would guess at a caliber 59... but thats a guess.

I rally like these old boy's size 59 powered watches. They look nice on bundt straps.

I picked up a similar oyster cased model from a local watchmaker’s junk box, the shop had been around long enough that some pretty old stuff had accumulated over the years. Anyway, when i later had trouble with the setting mechanism he went into one of those old boxes and came out with a set of new parts for the setting and winding mechanism.

so the stuff is out there, its just it sometimes takes a lot of time and luck to locate it.

oh.... and money, often obscene amounts of it.

There used to be a ton of watchmakers by me unfortunately a lot of them have retired and the same old story, AD's have younger guys and only interested in the newer stuff. I need to find a reputable guy near me for my growing vintage collection. Are you aware of any online database with early tudor models? I have quite a few complete guides to watches which dosen't even have tudor in them!!

No, sorry, there doesn’t seem to be any interest in early Tudor stuff.

i think we have two problems. A lot of people seem to regard them as a Rolex wanna-be, not to be taken seriously, and a lot of the early stuff is pretty small. Its a shame really because they are a nice watch.

You can find a crown, but it will probably cost more than the watch. I suspect you need one of those "OYSTER PATENT" crowns.

That's an ambitious asking price IMO, but you won't get one for pocket change.

So, in doing my research the rolex caliber 59 and the tudor caliber 59 are totally interchangeable, the only difference is one says rolex and the other says Tudor? If someone knows and can confirm this this would be great!!

You are one up on me if you have seen this movement marked Rolex. I have only ever seen them behind either a Tudor or an Oyster dial.

Im sorry, should note that according to the Ranfft database, the rolex cal 59 is marked with a 59, no rolex anywhere but the tudor has no 59 but says Tudor.. both have 17 rubies and look identical and are FHS. Looks like both were for the Canadian market in the 30's - 40's..
