hey all, I am brand new to the watch world and wanted to get a little guidance on a vintage I am interested in. I read the learn how to fish guide and this one ticks all the boxes as far as I can tell. Before I go any farther, wanted to ask - are there any obvious tells on this watch that are red flags? Appreciate the help and am looking forward to learn even more 馃榾

Is that a scratch on the dial between the 2:00 marker and center post? That's what jumps out at me.

First, welcome, and thanks for reading the "how to fish" thread -- you're already ahead of the game!

Second, the style of photos are very familiar to some of us here (Closer from Japan, right?) and usually represent pretty good value. I've personally bought at least half a dozen from them, and regret none. They are high volume, and regularly have sales, so don't feel you have to rush. Which leads me to...

Third: nice choice for a first vintage! You can tie yourself up in knots getting the "perfect" watch, but if it speaks to you, do it.

Finally: these two are on my radar from the same seller. Both are less common 36mm sizes, very similar price, variations on a theme really. I don't mean to confuse, but just to reinforce there are good deals around (especially with weak Yen at the moment).

Again, welcome to the forums!

The bigger crown is a replacement, but that's not a surprise. The originals are long discontinued.

These are my 166.010.

Also note that the 166.010 case comes in two "styles". One, the sides of the lugs are curved, the other, flat. Both are authentic.

Slightly off topic, but did the 168.024 seamaster's also come with those thinner crowns @SkunkPrince?

This might be of interest for you (though no date and no crosshair... 馃槈)

Hmm. Looking at the pic of a 166.0010 (updated numbering) on that site shows a thin crown with finer knrurling, and looking again closer at teh 168.00024 shows a crown similar to the top pic.

So I'm inclined to think that the crowns for these changed over the years.

Thanks for that @SkunkPrince, I know when it comes to the 166.010 that it definitely came with the scalloped crown and that many say so did the 168.024, however, I've never seen a 168.024 with a scalloped crown (on the forums or in the wild). I actually have a spare scalloped crown and Im in two minds whether I should attach it to my 168.024 for this reason.

yup closer from japan! good to hear they are reputable, figured as much with how many good reviews they have. To your point about the perfect watch, I find myself already in a bit of "analysis paralysis" so good reminder that ultimately, its about what speaks to you 馃榾

Thanks @hoipolloi, so just to confirm the 168.024 never came with the scalloped crown?
I cannot confirm anything. I only say what I have seen in the years of collecting vintage Omega, I have not seen one 168.024 coming with a scalloped crown yet.
