This is the watch my grandfather received at his retirement on 13 May 1972, the date is engraved on the back. Any information about when it was made and what it is worth would be much appreciated. I could not see how I could open the back, so preferred to err on the side of caution. Here again, any advice appreciated.
Many thanks in advance,
Johan

It appears to open through the front. I'd suggest having a watchmaker open it for you and remove the movement, so you can get good photos of the movement and inside for your records. That way you will have comprehensive and definitive information about the watch.

Dial looks like it has nice patina to it. Probably the lighting but looks like the acrylic crystal aged and discolored. The watchmaker can get it all sorted, serviced, and will have a beautiful sentimental valued piece.

Feel free to post once you get the movement info, even better if you can grab a few photos or have the watchmaker do so. Really helps everyone give an educated assessment.

I managed to pry off the crystal, it has not discoloured, but the dial clearly has a nice patina, there is a colour difference where the bezel covered the dial. I did not get any further, as I do not know hoe to remove the stem and pull out the movement, it all seems very tight. Will have to take this to a watchmaker.

Looks like nice original watch. I wouldn’t go further with it take it to watchmaker for service.

Thank you! It still works, too. Do you have any idea of what its value might be?

You should not have done that. Now you need to find a way to secure the watch so that the hands and dial doesn’t touch anything while you transport it to the watchmaker.

For your family, the sentimental value is the. most important thing.

For others, the value mainly depends on the case material. If the case is 14k or 18k gold, then the value is scrap +$150, more or less, because of the current high price of gold. If the case is gold-filled, then the value is about $400 IMO, again more-or-less.
