Vintage Constellation - Redial?

Just picked this up to wear at my wedding in a few months, always wanted a constellation and the price was right, seller hasn't shipped it out yet but I'm looking at the pics and noticing the pie pan isn't quite as sharp as most I'm seeing. Is this a redial or is there variation in the sharpness? The stars in the constellation are worn off if that's any indication of how used this is.

Would you pass even <$1k?

Very much so. There's (almost) no more value in the dial, neither in the case in this condition. The movement and some of the parts will have some value, but I wouldn't buy this for 500€ tbh.

If you want a nice example for <1kUSD, look for dome dials. These can be had for that money and in great shape. Piepans not so much, as you've just found out.

Okay, just asked for my funds back. Thanks for the heads up. I'm happy to go >$1kUSD, but it seems like piepans are >$2k these days. What's the reference on the dome dial you mentioned?

The refs are the same. There 168.005 with pie-pan and with dome dials, or 167.005 if you'd prefer the cleaner no-date, 14381... there are quite a few options from about that time.

As long as it doesnt have to be solid gold, these definitely and regularly go for <2k$ in open auctions, but also here in the classifieds. You mentioned that it's still a few month to your wedding, that should be plenty to find a nice example. Would a stainless steel case also be an option or only gold-cap?

I'm really looking for a gold cap as it'll nicely fill that vintage dress watch gap I have in my collection, plus I'm thinking it'll go great with the color of my suit. Is a good example gold cap asking too much in the price range? Maybe something from the seamaster line if so?

What is your price range? Finding a nice gold-capped Seamaster for <1k$ is definitely easier than finding a Constellation.

You’ll find that people are more eager to provide their opinion on a watch if you post pictures instead of links - it’ll also help others searching through the forum in the future as the link will lead to nothing at some point, pictures stay.

Looks much better, original dial - personally, I like them without the “officially certified”, just looks a little cleaner. Also a heavily polished case though - and I’m not sure if this ref ever came with this style of crown. As you’d expect from C24, the price isn’t exactly a bargain either.

I also think you'd be better off with a Seamaster. They are no less dressy than a Constellation and for its age that Constellation is likely not much of a chronometer any more unless it was serviced religiously every few years.

This is my gold-capped Seamaster.

Noted - thanks. Sounds like the hunt is on. How can you tell that case is "heavily" polished? Just by the sharpness of the lugs?

Here’s one I’d consider pretty sharp for comparison:

Wow, going thru some FS ads, that railtrack you just sold... would have jumped on that in a heartbeat. 😲

Any thoughts on this one - looks pretty polished considering the lugs and caseback yeah? Does a gold cap/gold dial fetch any more or less than a gold cap/white dial? Getting my reps in going thru listings now...

The new owner also wore it at his wedding by the way. 😀

Can I just add - hopefully without sounding mean - that you should probably ask yourself if you really want a dog-leg Constellation with a pie-pan dial, or if it is something you think you want to wear at your wedding because you've been told it is "the one" to have? I ask this since the one you show here exhibits none of those defining characteristics.

If it is a Constellation you want there are heaps available.
If it is a Constellation in good condition you want, there are plenty for sale.
If it is the Constellation of the type most people think of when they think of this model and you want it to be in good condition, there are few for sale at any time at a reasonable price and you better do your homework.

Here is a gold cap Constellation for sale at another forum at $1000 which I think is a reasonable example of how nice a Constellation should be at that price:

It's an earlier reference and not a pie-pan as you can see.

Ask yourself if you like the look and if the condition is as good as you want it to. The rest is less important at this stage. You are right about the level of polishing and of course the hands have been painted black at some point to improve visibility - not uncommon to see on old watches.

And, contrast that Constellation with this remarkably similar Seamaster.

Is it really a Constellation you need?
