I have a feeling (based on little other than never having seen the font before) that this particular triangulated 'Egyptian' font could be particular to those almost triangular cases alone. I don't see the font being anywhere near so harmonious in any other shaped case..

Well as it turns out the triangular shaped font is also present on the round Gruen watch posted by @Pierre1333.
However I’m not sure whether it should necessarily be called « Egyptian » because the beautiful silver watch with an Egyptian looking head posted by @bubba48 has another type of font.

Also while the Gruen watch has what appear to be some scarab motifs on the dial, the enamel freezes around the case don’t look Egyptian at all.

Which is why I think those are all a bit of a mish-mash of styles, with the OP watch being predominantly art nouveau, @bubba48’s watch being predominantly art deco (despite the earlier style font), and the Gruen watch being sort of in between various styles.

In any event it would be interesting to find further documentation to determine how that font might be characterized.

And indeed another round cased Longines posted by Yves earlier in the thread has triangulated numerals....I should have reread the rest of the thread I suppose. Nevertheless, they aren't any where near as harmonious in a round case IMO.

I agree with you, there are some other watches on the market with the same shaped numerals but none have the harmony that these special Longines have. Not that I'm playing salesman for the watch or anything

Example of more use of this type of numeral. Isn't it ironic that the Egyptians placed more value in the heart than the brain and you can acquire the Longines at Hartman galleries

Not much real info out there about Cleopatra but it took until after the dark ages for us to use Arabic numerals again, ( the use of the number 0 is rather important)bloody Romans... Funnily enough in tennis zero or nothing is named love.

Not a watch, but reviving this thread for some really nice silver art deco/Egyptian bowls, previously sold at Christies, and now at a local auction house: https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/...0832/lot-4118879f-a2d5-4f34-84a2-adb5000d5158

Considering the scrap is about £120, the low estimate at £150 seems very reasonable.

Cool of you to post them dear @Lucasssssss —not sure they’re art deco but those must be what tourist souvenirs were at the time, considering the relatively crude worksmanship. Really fun to see, and funky 👍

A gorgeous art deco lamp which epitomizes the Egyptian inspiration. (Also posted in the art deco thread).

offered on auction a few days ago- but which apparently didn’t sell. Unsurprisingly it got quite a few bids—but apparently stayed below estimates.
