I am not sure if this reference is the only one with twisted lugs but the 881101 is the other reference with twisted lugs but includes a tachymeter bezel too. But bezeless i believe the 222100 is the only one with twisted lug case.

Yes i have seen the black dial variant of the 22297/1 on snippets of Sala’s book from a few sites. It makes me wonder why a 22297 from the 50s would have a black dial and improbable to have it for the 222100 in the 60s. From what i read, i believe all evil claptons are from the 60s so it would make sense that the 222100 came in a black dial variant too from possibly excess dials.

From Foss’ example, i think it is the 222100/1 reference that came in the black dial. No indiciation on the other 2 but it is a possibility since the 22297/1 also came in a black dial variant.

It may not be the case that it has it’s own /X designation since the black dial of the 22297 came in the /1 which has also a silver applied markers dial combination (correct me if i am wrong). I also found this 22297/3 with a black dial. so i am not sure a /X actually differentiates the dial variant? Unless these sources are selling incorrect pieces.

Makes me wonder if the italian dealer was peddling a franken piece too...

Just like the 22297/1, the other variants of that reference do not have painted indices either and based on Sala’s book the 22297/1 did come in a black dial variant with the same painted indices.

It is always a mystery w Universal Geneve, when it comes to “rare” pieces. But just like blueberry bezels in Rolex GMTs, while there are no known historical records, we can only trust the people who come out to disprove or say it exists...

Yeah I was surprised the price was under 10k. It’s not like it lasted too many hours at that price.

I was surprised it was under 10K too which is why I jumped on it. Arrived today and is a real stunner. I was a bit nervous as I jumped quickly thinking I wouldn't have time to evaluate the watch. i also have been out of UGs for so long (sold my entire collection several years ago) and have no current idea where valuations are. They gave me a seven day return period so felt ok about it. Dial appears mint and case is still pretty sharp. has been polished but still pretty good.

I personally think you did really well! No way you could get the watch cheaper, unless someone really mispriced it on EBay or something. I’m shocked Hodinkee sold it for such a deal! They normally charge a little bit more than other sellers for an equivalent watch.

here are a few quick pics I took while doing a running test. sorry for the bad quality. Ignore the old strap it is on, that is just so I didnt wear in the one the sent me with it until I knew i was keeping. I have a really nice dial 1.jpg dial 2.jpg dial 3.jpg 1960 beads of rice bracelet that looks great on it as well as an original 1960s 19mm oysterflex style bracelet. Both give it a very different yet cool look.

Do the dials on these always age so well ? Or are these with replacement dials ? Based on dial alone almost every single one posted in this thread looks like a new watch.

i have had examples of every derivation of Tri-compax and I think that this model ages the best. The others often flaked, even the sport model twisted lug versions. These seem to hold on better.

here are a few more pictures. Love the look on the vintage bracelet though wish the end pieces fit better. Pretty happy with this pick-up.

Any Tri is a nice Tri but I do like these later models... I really must take some newer photos.
