It wasn't very long ago that I had little affinity for watches with anything other than perfectly round dials. Then, during this past year, these found their way into my collection and are now among my favourites. What about you? Any Un-Rounds in your collection that you're especially fond of? (hoping...hoping...hoping... to see some triangular watches )
Not owned by me, but worth a mention - Hamilton Ventura *edit* By some strange coincidence I was wandering past a shop that sells Hamiltons (amongst other brands) and saw a Ventura on display, so I thought I'd have a closer look and try it on. My impressions - too small, too flimsy and far too expensive. In fact, having seen and handled one in the flesh, it looks like a cheap novelty watch made of silvered plastic Just about the only attractive aspect is the funky design. My advice - buy a Hamilton Khaki instead
Owned by me, but I don’t have it here with me and I can’t find a picture. It was the first “grown up” watch I wanted in the 90s (I had a few Swatches), I first saw it in advertisements, then I found out about the history, Elvis, first electric watch (I was studying EE at the time), it looked cool and had an interesting history (these two criteria have been guiding my collection since then – a friend recently remarked “you always have a story to tell about any new watch” and it was very nice to hear) so I asked my family to get that for me as a graduation present. It felt like a crazy expense at the time, I was so proud of it. Unfortunately Hamilton’s quality at the end of the 90s wasn’t great so it’s chromed base metal but it will always remain important for me. I often considered getting an original cal 505 but haven’t jumped in yet. I have other non-round watches, an ultra-thin cal 711 that is the first watch I serviced and repaired by myself: and a cal 1020 Seamaster with my favorite bracelet:
I have a thing for the Heuer Silverstone... an itch that has to be scratched some day .... (Not mine) Vintage: And modern reissue:
A Schmitz Freres clamshell: Confession time: I've always wanted one of these (from the @X350 XJR collection)...
It will be interesting to watch this thread develop. Only this humble 14kt gold Glycine represents the un-round tribe in the collection here.
Are you a Naughtical () chap, obsessed with accuracy? Just don this and take to the helm of your 75' cruiser. The back is even protected against the perspiration you may work up as you navigate the marina .
May I respectfully ask members not to post reversos. I want one dearly but can't justify buying a watch I'll never wear. Too casual for dress, too dressy for casual!
I have quite a few. I really like them. This one is a chunky bugger and is hard to miss. I like the fact that this one is quite an unusual shape. The crown on the opposite side takes a bit of getting used to though. This one gets quite a lot of attention. Two people stopped me in the street wanting to look at it. It is in fantastic condition for a gold plated watch. There are 6 known examples of the solid gold version. The Omega museum doesn't even have one. Finally there is this one. I think it is stunning and really like the vintage picary strap. I have a omega strap too but I think it looks nice on this one. Three of the above I bought from Tom Dick, if you get the chance to buy from him, do so, they are always so much better in the flesh than in the pictures.
