Two Tone Speedmaster, should it sell?

The first time I saw one of these, I thought it looked awful.

It did, but because it was in terrible condition. Then I was offered one in Paris, in flawless condition for Euros 7000 about 12 years ago - which was, and perhaps is, too much money for me.

Since then various people have offered them for between $3000 and 6000 with the bracelet.

I know also there is a small but loyal following. Am I coming round to them? Maybe.

But when I did the maths on this one, it just feels too much money, especially missing the bracelet.

What do we think?

Will it sell?

I like and dislike it all at the same time. Perhaps a stainless steel bezel would make the dial more distinguished and less two tone like.

Rolex poisoned me with two tones for some reason.

At the right price I would still buy it anyway.

What serial range do folks expect ?

I feel cautious when looking at this example. Why does it appear the top of the lugs have been badly sanded down? Given your experience with these @Spacefruit would you say top of the lugs are normal, ok, or not? The back of the watch suggests to me the watch has been very well cared for, but the front doesn’t tell that same story to me

Price expectation doesn’t seem to have gained much traction since your first experience with it, has it?

Back of watch for posterity

I was going to say the same re: the lugs/case. They look poorly refinished with remnants of polishing compound as if a polisher, perhaps more familiar with jewellery or other watches, refinished the case but didn’t really know how it was meant to look.

Aside off the lugs, I love the TT of this watch a lot.

Bukowskis had one up last year, and I was kind of interested in this one!
Looking at the pictures and also talking to the curator, the watch was in a nice condition!
It had the factory seal on the case!

But not sure if I would like the watch on my wrist, so I skipped on it...
But it might "grow" on you? Two-tones are a bit hard to love in the beginning maybe?

It’s a gorgeous watch, but precious few can ever pull it off without looking like either an old man or a sex pest.

Two tone watches were everywhere in the 70's and early 80's....I think every manufacturer had them. The two tone Datejust was THE watch in that era, it was my first good watch that I bought new in 1976 for $775. They were at a good price point relative to an all stainless steel watch that seemed blah or a solid 18k gold watch that was a little over the top for most situations. The Royal Oak and Nautilus lines each had two tone versions. I'm not sure why they are so polarizing, they weren't back in real time. I don't mind them, I don't go looking for them but if something interesting comes along I'll take a look. It's all personal preference.

As far as the two tone Speedmaster in this thread, it's a bit odd with the champagne dial. I've never actually seen one so I really can't comment on how they look on the wrist. I imagine it would look pretty good.

much less heinous than a Rolex two tone but still an acquired taste.

It will sell. But, is it a bigger sin than the two-tone Explorer 1?

The explorer 1 doesn't exist.

Yup. I was bidding on that one… Lost it and am annoyed by that to this day!

As to the example @Spacefruit commented on above; I am clearly in the market for one, at the right price. This one isn’t, for me, not without the TT bracelet, that is.

I love it that more than I should.
And it will sell, maybe in the middle of the estimate.

The big problem with this two-tone Speedmaster is IMO that the Italian Special DD145.0022-2 is just far, far nicer. It has a personality that works with interesting straps too. I don’t mind the other one, but this one is just cooler.

@Aludic - that was unhappy for you! 🙁
The watch looked to be in a very nice condition, and the hammerprice was around 5000 € plus the premium!
I haven't seen any more around in that condition...

But they might "surface"??

Looks great at that price. I am sure it will sell. Even in todays uncertain and slow market.
