Omega, and other Swiss companies, would send uncased movements and dials to the US, France, England, and have them cased in that country to avoid import duties on gold.

For the US....they would also send a 17j version to save import taxes, also they stated "unadjusted" for the same reason.

Nice watch. I remember the fun of the “first one” and strap hunting. Enjoy!

No, emphatically. First, that buckle is probably fake, and from the late 60s/early 70s, besides. It's also overpriced.

This is closer to what you should be looking for:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/255569583100

In that time period, based on those pictures in the catalog, the straps are American made and whatever buckle they came with was... what they came with.

This is all good information but just to clarify, those first straps may not be period correct, but they will fit the watch, i.e. they are the right size. And while they are expensive, they appear to be genuine crocodile skin, which is a premium leather. It's up to you what strap you want to choose, you can try to match the type of strap that was original to the watch, or just choose a strap that appeals to you. Different people take different approaches.

I was hoping for a brown leather, possibly croc if available. The watchmaker found a period-correct plated buckle. I was hoping to try to find a 14k solid gold just to have as a nice thing on an Omega branded band but it's not necessary and might even be out of the realm of what's necessary to enjoy it.

Thanks for the heads up, I was out getting gas at da Wawa and hadn't done a real deep dive, it was just the first listing, so I'm glad to know to stay away! 😀

You can get a good-quality brown alligator from Hirsh. Not all parameters apply to all. Depending on your wrist size, you might need the longest they make.

This is the retailer I normally use, even though they're in UK.

But do look around, and don't be afraid to first choose calf with an embossed pattern to start with; it costs quite a bit less and looks mostly the same.

You might ask Scott about that one (that's his name). He has it listed as 11/16" but it's labeled 3/4".

He has a huge inventory of some very nice stuff, but he prices it somewhat higher as a result. But if he has what you want and you don't mind paying for it, then you'll get something really nice.

I have paid his prices more than once, because no one else had what he had. 😀

The eyes you guys have for these things. I really need to slow down and look at these details better. I like the items he has but, yes, I am finding some other cheaper ones.

Oh man, I don't know much but I know that's a fake buckle.

These buckles/straps aren't fakes, they're 70s/80s Speidel straps made for Omega.

I had been through the buckle thread and hadn't seen one that looked riveted. I did say I don't know anything. Lol

wasn't scolding only clarifying as this question comes up from time to time.
From what i gather Speidel made these for US market as replacement straps, they came in big cardboard fold-out cases with ~40(?) or so straps.
i've had a few of the dealer cases over the years.

I love the look of the strap but trying to keep somewhat period for the buckle on this.

Yes, this is a US market gold plated buckle. However, it is in poor condition.

Was thinking about this one as I just got a good discount offer.

much more recent than the watch, not a great match in style or quality imo

What do you think is more appropriate for the watch?
