Trying to figure out if this is a good watch for my father's birthday

I have been searching for the perfect watch for my father and I have stumbled upon this Omega electronic f300 which is in amazing condition and has the reference number 196001 I have found out it is a bit of a mystery here on the forum about this reference number on this model so I am looking for more opinions on whether to buy this watch or not for my father. The buyer seemed really nice and knowledgeable and has answered any questions regarding the watch.

I would not think a hummer would be a good first watch. They are more of a novelty and a bit esoteric. Of course if one is into Accutrons or outside the box things, then it does make for a unique gift.

we also share watches a lot and I have a Seamaster Cosmic that he wears sometimes that is the watch that started it, and due to the fact is the same year, the movement is also something quite unique for him as well. I was more concerned about the really odd reference number and the dial I was not able to find anywhere else raised a bit of a question mark.

I don't see any issues with the watch. However they need a specialist to service or repair them.

I too would not recommend one of these as a first vintage, especially when there are so many other options available.

Noted the recommendation and thank you for your response!

I live in the UK and have three. All are a delight to wear and accurate.

Modern Renata batteries generally work in them and new caseback gaskets are available (here I get them from Cousins UK) but it helps if you know how to unscrew the caseback and battery retainer so that you can replace the battery yourself when it needs changing.

I f*****d up one of mine when trying to adjust the time (just careless stupidity) but the service and repair cost £300.

That said, these are great watches if you can get one in nice condition.

Thank you so much for your response! I would love to hear a bit more about your mistake just so I don't do something similar to that and protect the watch. And yes the condition is indeed really nice, but dop you happen to have the same reference number on your pieces?

My three have Cal 1250 movements.

My tip is not to try to change the date/time in the hours before or after midnight 😀
