My first OMEGA happens tomorrow…very excited. That said (I’ve read a few threads on here about this - but would appreciate fresh opinions & thoughts), what are your feelings on winders?

I intend to be a daily wearer; but, my work can range from sedentary office management to rather “rough” (and, at times, bloody). For the known rough days, I may choose to give the new OMEGA a holiday…thoughts on winders?

Thanks all!

Let the fun begin. You will get a LOT of opinions on winders vs just winding it as needed. I myself like it ready to go when I decide to wear them.

Congratulations in advance on your new Omega!
My 2 cents: Take the money you'd spend on a winder, and buy a G-Shock for those rough, bloody days.

Cheers,

Exciting! Any photos?

Your title reminded me of a fat guy I know. He always says his diet begins tomorrow.

For the record, it’s not called “fat,” it’s called “difficult to kidnap.” LOL

If you only have one watch, a winder isn't needed. If you have multiple automatic watches, a winder might be useful depending on how often you want to switch out watches.

I vote "no" on a winder. And what do these "bloody" days entail? I rarely don't wear one of my watches while doing all kinds of activities. Even if I do, it's for a few hours until the activity is over.

If it'll be a regular daily wearer, no winder necessary. Even sitting at a desk should keep it wound and if not, a couple turns of the crown at the beginning or end of the day will suffice. Agree you may want a beater for the bloody work; the Omega will probably be able to handle it but a little variety is a lot of fun!

The SAS sometimes had a rough and bloody days "at the office" and they wore their Seamasters. Are your work worse than theirs?
Get a Casio and wind your Omega when you get home from work.

If the watch has a date feature, I'm in the camp that a watch winder is a good idea. From my years on online perusing, I learned that most of the wear and tear on a watch movement comes from manual winding and setting the time and date. This seems to be especially true for the movements with a jump hour feature (i.e., Omega 8900, etc.) where it takes a lot of turns of the hands to set the date.

As other have mentioned though, if it's your only automatic and you'll be giving it rests of no more than a couple of days at a time, a winder is likely unnecessary, since modern Omegas will yield 55-60 hours of power reserve on a full wind.

Thanks for all the thoughts and advice! In the end, I’ll likely get a winder for the times when I know the watch will be on an extended hiatus from my wrist. At this juncture, I love the watch so much, I have difficulty taking it off at all! LOL

Congrats on your new watch. We need a pic!

As far as winders, I have tried everything from generic brands to Wolf winders. I settled for Rothwell winders because in my opinion, they give the most value for the money and I much prefer how they operate. Check them out.

I don't believe you own any watches until I see a pic. Rule #1. You might post them in another thread, but they are needed in all threads you start about watches, at least imo!

I vote no on winder. Give the thing a rest if you take a break from it. It's not some PP perpetual calendar, you can set these fairly easily.

Winders: I don't use one, but we have one for my wife's watch. She doesn't wear it daily and just wants to grab and go so it works well for her. If she had to reset the time and date each time it would never be worn. (Yes, in hindsight probably should have just gotten her a quartz)

IF you get a winder, get a good enough one that has muti-direction and multi-rotation speed settings. Different watches have different rates or directions that they need to be rotated. Many have way more rotations than needed with no way to adjust. I have a Barrington that has done a great job for over 5yrs now.

Also will add about winders that there's no need to really get a really expensive one unless you want to. All you need is multi directional and multi speed.

I'm pro watch winder but not an expensive one. I keep a cheap one watch Diplomat for when I need it. I think it was $35 on Amazon. I've had one since around 2016. It's not much to look at so mine is not displayed prominently but it works well. It's quiet. It has multiple turn cycles and turns in both directions.

I don't always use it but if I feel like I haven't worn a watch enough during the day (because I'm swapping watches) or if I think I've been especially sedentary during the day I'll throw the watch on the winder overnight and the next day I know it's good to go.

It's not an absolute necessity, but I think it has its purpose. I just wouldn't buy an expensive one.

So basically- post another picture in this thread, OP. Maybe a couple. More than, really- the summer blue dials need different angles and lighting conditions, so no less than 6 pictures are required.

That’s great advice, thanks! I just viewed some Rothwells online. They are beautiful and the price point is not outrageous. IF I can ever bring myself to take it off my wrist, I think the Rothwell looks like the best choice I’ve seen. Thanks, again!
