makes sense

the red I find a fascinating topic. I don’t own one, but I do think it’s a unique looking Speedy - and “unique” tends to be interesting in its own right.

that said, there seems to be a strange echo chamber on OF about their desirability. far as I can tell, the red first got more discussion around here several months back because people discovered the red versions were still available, sitting on AD/OB shelves in Japan over two years after release. on one hand, that’s cool if you like the red and want one at pricing near MSRP; on the other hand, aren’t they still sitting on shelves in Japan (and the most available on Chrono24) for a reason?

I say all this fully aware that many watches that once sat stagnant are now wildly desirable. Maybe that will be true of the reds one day.

but I’m not quite following the apparent assertions that as of today the reds are among the most desirable - except maybe to OF!?

Well, *I* sure as heck want a Rising Sun! 😀 I hope they stay down in price for another six months or so...

They are becoming little harder to find as weeks go by. 6 months hopefully around at good prices.

It is a strange dichotomy. I believe the Rising Sun is still under the radar for many but will gain exposure and cult status over time. Ultimately, it is the most unique and striking watch of the 5 and there has not been anything like it produced before (apart from the gold Apollo 11 50th anniversary edition). Given its distinctive design and limited numbers it is only a matter of time before it is competing with some of the more coveted limted editions that exist.

These watches were around $6000 retail. When they launched in 2018, they went to around $10,000 in the aftermarket. After the games were cancelled, they sunk down to a little over retail. I would think if the games were cancelled they'd stay low.
I'm unconvinced this will be the case. Collectors across the board (I mean not just watch collectors) put a premium on mistakes and unusual/out of the ordinary editions.
Maybe not immediately but at some point in the future, if the games are cancelled, it will only have a positive impact on the value of the Olympic Games watches.

It wouldn't surprise me if the watches appreciate dramatically in a couple of years. But for now, their value seems mostly tied to the viability of the Tokyo Olympics.

I agree. Especially the Rising Sun which is both strikingly attractive and unique. Remember when other limited edition Speedmasters were deemed relatively undesirable? Then people cottoned on to the fact they were unique and in limited supply and now they are unattainable. Same will happen to the Rising Sun imho.

I can only recommend to put an Apollo 11 50th Anniversary flat link bracelet with uncle seiko end links on it. In my opinion a perfect fit
Very nice. im waiting for mine to come. What are the end link you used ? I understand they Uncle Seiko sells hollow and solid end links?

thanks

I read the first five or six pages of this 5 1/2 year old thread and laugh at all the hand wringing and pearl clutching comments when these were introduced in mid-2018. Omega was destroying itself with all the Limited Edition watches, especially the panda and blue dial versions which were knockoffs of previous models! After the 2020 Olympic, and the two Apollo 11 50th watches, there haven't been any limited edition pieces, just the vague 'limited production' models like the Snoopy 50th and Ed White 321. Be careful what you wish for.

Could not agree more here. I was criticizing them as well, but mostly around the amount of LE releases.

A middle way would have been nice… still LE‘s but not 5 different ones every year. Now it seems we‘re not getting any new Speedies. Grass is always greener on the other side, isn‘t it 😉.

Eh, no, I would be very surprised to see a dedicated Apollo 11 or 13 this year and next. That's not how Omega works anymore, and celebrating 55 years is pretty meh.

Hardly a new model, just an ugrade to justify an almost 50% price increase from 2018. You really want a rehash of Buzz's butt? No thanks.
