To wind or not to wind?

Hi all,
I am very active sports wise and have recently invested in a Garmin watch, I can see this hardly ever leaving my wrist. I have a PO and would like opinions on whether or not to use a watch winder whilst this is not being worn.

If you're still going to wear the PO sporadically every day or every other day I guess a winder may be nice to keep it running for you. If you're going to put it away for days or weeks at a time then no. In general I don't think winders are worth it.

Hello, I personally am not a fan of winders. Handwinding and setting timepieces is part of the ownership experience. Also, consistent interaction with your watch gives you indications of when something could be wrong.

I'm "very active sports wise" too (in an age-appropriate way, mind), and I always enjoy the après-sport time, when stretches, showers, and physio are over, I change into normal-being clothes, and go for something to eat with others like-minded. The transformation would not be complete or deliver so much if I didn't dump the Garmin and put a real watch (including my SMPO) back on. Try this, you'll enjoy more watch-time, and you'll never need a winder!

Nothing wrong with a quality winder that stops at reasonable intervals. Some are programmable and you can find the right settings for your PO. I don’t mind if a watch runs down while not in use. But what’s annoying is setting a date or other more intricate complications like moonphases etc.
Maybe wait and see if your PO doesn’t end up getting more wrist time than you expect now.
I wear an Apple Watch for sports but that’s it.

I’ve had a ton of different winders over the years, including some moderate and some pricier ones. The good ones work great, until they don’t. A few years ago I just started winding all my watches that are in regular-ish rotation every night. It’s 5-10 minutes straight of winding, some manuals and some automatics, but it gives me much more joy than any of the winders ever did. And, I’m never surprised when something isn’t wound, or even worse the winder malfunctioned and something got damaged.

Update: The Garmin is on the side and will only be put on for ease of recording activities. After only a week, I found the first thing in a morning was to check my stats! Sleep, hr, stress, recovery, etc! No, no, no, there are enough things in daily life to worry/think about, I do not need another responsibility. If you do wear one of these daily, I ask you to note how many times a day you look at it to check one of its many functions, I think you will soon realise that it has taken over your life. PO back on daily (it tells me the time and date), Garmin ready for sports persuits.

I’m glad you came to your senses. 😉 I’ve tried the Fitbit thing a couple of times and stopped wearing my watches. Only really cared about the heart rate stat. Sleep tracker was wildly inaccurate. Many other issues with it. I’m so done with “smart” watches. Like you said, it’s just more crap to worry about and offers no enjoyment.
