Hi all, I’m out and about out of town and happened upon this Waltham 17 jewel pocket watch. It’s working, the dial is flawless, case is in nice shape and the bow is tight. The pocket watch database dates it to 1901, but doesn’t mention if it was railway grade for its day. I’m trying to not buy all the pocket watches in the world, so sticking to railroad grade fir the most part. Thoughts?

$140 Canadian?

@DaveK ,

pocketwatchdatabase.com would have the information on that, based on the S# which I can’t read. It likely says the Waltham is NOT of railroad standard.

By 1901, a movement would have to have marked the following: position adjustments, heat and cold adjusted, double roller. It would have to be lever set, But I have seen 1883 model Walthams not marked as above, STEM SET, single roller, not marked with adjustments, that were accepted by the CPR! By the standards for railroad approved watches as set down in 1892, the Waltham would not be of railroad standard. But if a railroad chose to accept a watch that didn’t meet those standards entirely, it was to their own detriment. So, no, it is not railroad approved……..unless someone accepted it.

Thanks @Canuck , the serial is 11021173

The skinny on the Waltham lists it as “adjusted”, though the movement doesn’t appear to be so marked. It is stem set, not lever set. The listing doesn’t call it railroad grade. I prefer to collect railroad standard watches that meet the 1892 standards, and that I KNOW they would be approved by ALL railroads.
