Similar price if not less for me, plated with the plating wriggling off (it says stainless steel or is it just the crown that is plated?)
wow. i am surprised and disappointed. how would you spend $450 for a present, first time vintage watch?
This would depend entirely on the recipient. Is he/she likely to wear it often? What size and style is he/she interested in? I would avoid complications as servicing down the road will be more expensive. Below are a couple of neat options. i would think daily wearer. first mechanical watch. he liked the chrono look in pictures, but limits the options. would like to stay in the 50s and 60s, 35mm+ thanks for any advice.
I´d say the "bad thing" about getting into older/vintage chronographs at this price level is that the watches on offer will often cost almost the same to service as their worth. Loads of seller claims "recent service", but without any documentation to back it up, it did not happen! I have a couple of chronographs in my "archives" that falls into this category. Example: 1950s "Hugex" branded chrono. Great dial, lovley (albeit chrome) case, Valjoux 92 column wheel movement in clean but dry condition. Worth? USD400?? Cost of service (at least in the region of the world that I live) USD300++
In the case of the watch in question it's the marking "Fond acier inoxydable". It translates to "stainless steel back". When only the back is marked as stainless, the rest is not.
