Just remembered this post after taking the watch in for its service. Had the watchmaker unscrew the case back so I could retrieve the serial number. Turns out this is one the the lucky few to be apart of the Famous 100,000. I have a 24476XXX movement. I will be doing more research on this. Thanks for the information!
You might be able to take the onyx inserts from a damaged seamaster dial if they fit the indices for a constellation...
They are supposed to be Onyx inserts but it looks like they were removed at one time. I have been keeping an eye out for a scrap dials that I could possibly interchange the inserts to this dial. Hopefully something will come up!
Just received a call that the service has been done and the watch is running great. I will pick it up in a few weeks when I get back. I didn't think to check if a 36mm or 34mm but will let you know after I pick it up. Thanks!
The serial is in range of a switching between onyx and painter markers. It may be a faded painted marker dial, who would remove onyx markers from a dial??
The recesses are too deep for paint and the 12 markers certainly look like onyx inserts. Onyx was used through the 25millions in 564 movts. Probably some missing and a previous owner thought it looked better without ‘missing teeth’. A scrap dial and a skilful watchmaker would make the watch a whole lot better. The case deserves the TLC.
That was my conclusion exactly. One or two had fallen off previously and the owner wanted to make it look "uniform".
The watch came back from its service and came back beautifully. Will post pictures once I am home again. Does anyone think the onyx markers on this square dial seamaster would work? It is priced a little high on ebay but since the ad has been sitting since 2016 I thought I would throw in a lowball offer. I can't imagine that they had to many variations of these types of indices.
