Thinking about buying this. I'm not used to looking at IWC's and really know nothing about them. Apparently it's 35mm.

    Thoughts on authenticity?
    Movement?

    Thanks,

If I see the edge of the movement correctly, that's a caliber 853. The case & caliber serial numbers date it to the early 60's.

The fonts look a little wonky to me. Might be a redial. Also, the wrong crystal retaining ring has been installed - looks like the edge of the dial is visible. Replacement crown too.

Good information. I'll probably pass on it. I might be tempted if the dial is original. How are replacement parts for the IWCs? Good supply or impossible to find? Just wondering if a watch maker could make it correct (assuming the dial is original). Thanks.

Wait for a better example. IWCs of that era are high-class watches, and the cal. 85x movements are among the best automatics ever produced. As long as you can afford a good example, best to wait for one to show up.

Should there be a T next to SWISS?

I don't believe that to is the original dial, as the applied IWC logo was definitely not used until well into the '60s. Given that the case and movement date to the mid-late '50s, it's a franken.

Tony beat me to it. The front loading cases were late 50's to late 60's, and the metal logo wasn't used until the very late 60's. Odds are it's not an original watch. Certainly a replacement crown, and some liberties were taken with the parts bin most likely.

Swing and I miss. I definitely need to do some more research on IWC. What would you expect to pay for a nice example at 35mm with an 852 or 853? Did these come in manual wind versions? Any recommendations on reading material? Thanks.

Should these have the fish crowns?

Expect at least around a grand for a decent, original example, and possibly much more, depending on condition, case material, etc.

The manual-wind equivalent at the time was the cal. 89, and it is also excellent.

Go to the official IWC forum; there's a wealth of information there.

Not all would have had fish crowns.

One more try.. What about this one? No inside pics but apparently caliber 89 and 36mm. I would obviously request pics before purchasing but curious about the dial.

I'm not an expert but to me that looks ok. However, you need to see the movement, check its number, the case back should show the reference number and case number which you should then be able to check via the wonder of google and the iwc forum.

The fonts are correct and in proper alignment. The detail on the lettering looks good but I'd like to see better macros before being sure.

    Do you mean this watch?:

If that watch is selling for $600 or $700 JUMP ON IT. As in NOW!!!! That's really cheap for a stainless 36 mm caliber 89 in that condition.
