Thoughts on the 145.0040 - Speedmaster "Teutonia"

Bare with me for a moment, I know that the Teutonic cases and design is not a taste a lot of us have any space for but at the same time is there anything else like it? In my opinion no and I've been looking at the Teutonics for some time now.

My first step into the Speedy territory was with an Mk2 that was so polished it could be used instead of a mirror - what a fail I barely made even on it.

Several months ago I've purchased a Mark V from it's original owner going by his words - don't know if true or not when serviced it was refreshed to mint condition with the last available Mk V bezel available from Bienne...
Indeed the watch is spotless, aside from the dial having a brownish patina on it, barely visible but there.

Now I'm getting the itch to get me a Teutonia - the ghost dial one I don't know why but I'm drawn to it.

Any sense in this purchase? Share your opinions on the watch and maybe an insight on what my budget should be and what to look for?
Mind you I don't have a Moon at the moment I did have the newer 2000+ references, nor another Mark Speedy so I don't know how well would the money be spent on this?
Not looking for re-sale but not looking to bust my budget on something like this when I could maybe be getting a "better" classic so to speak.

I prefer the "Teutonic" over the moon watch, but I have issues.

I love these watches for being "black sheeps"...

I own the silver and the black cal. 861 ref. 145.0040 and the "real" Mark V with cal. 1045 ref. 376.0806.

I think it's worth going for such a watch. They are rare and undervalued.

Here is my silver 145.0040:

I'm in the same boat, I didn't like the speedies enough to keep them... I tried three times, but this one looks so good tome.

Literally so chunky and modern but yet understated and classic because of the layout and the script that I'm going crazy over it. Just don't want to strike out with one how i did with previous speedies I've owned.

That's a beauty, as far as I'm seeing its the cheapest way to get into the legendary 861 caliber. Any truth in that?

Would you happen to have any hints or warnings for a prospective buyer?
What to look for etc.?
I mean I can just take my Mk5 and look at it but it's not the same especially not movement and dial wise.
The case more or less has that specific finish so a worn and tired example is easy to spot, full bracelet length a must etc etc..

Full bracelet lengths is a must have. They're hard to find and the ones Omega sells don't have the same finish.

One more question if I may, does it wear noticeably thinner than the Mk5 or is it almost the same?

The 145.0040 is a bit thinner and lighter on the wrist than the 376.0806. Both references wear nice, especially because of the well designed bracelets.

Seeing that the Mk5 is one of the most comfortable chronos I've owned... I need to get searching ::facepalm1::

Thanks!

I'm looking for the gray dial to go with my Mk5 and not to look like i have doubles in the collection.

The price is a think a bit steep at 3k$ albeit being box and papers etc. Thanks!
No question the price is very high. The gray dial appears to be the hard to find one.

The 145.0040s wear very well. The case is a bit wider than the Speedy Pro, but a bit thinner at only 12.5 mm. That, coupled with the short lug-to-lug of 45mm makes it fit the wrist easily. Sapphire crystal too.

Things to watch out for:
The Tachymeter bezel engraving isn't very deep - the numerals tend to disappear on well worn examples.
The bracelet is integrated with the case - no strap swapping. Be sure to pick one with a decent bracelet.

A couple of mine:

Given current prices I'd say a mk II or deville chronograph are still cheaper ways to get your 861 fix.

Which brings me to the teutonic more generally - I do like the design but would probably only go for it if I found one with true 'black sheep' / undervalued pricing i.e. 1k or so, as opposed to the close-to-moonwatch prices they seem to be commanding these days...

Early 70's MKII's are the best entry point to get a cal.861 (i believe so anyway!)

I've owned the Mk II and it wore pretty weird on my wrist, the DeVille Chrono didn't even cross my mind - It's like the perfect dressy chrono kind of watch imo.
But I'd rather get the "gray sheep" at this moment because I'm one Hodinkee post away from it going out of reach budget wise 😁.
