Thoughts on Grand Seiko.

I'm I the only one that feels like Grand Seiko's quartz run mechanical watch really isn't a mechanical watch? There using an electronic component powered by quartz to regulate the spring and to me that takes the nostalgia out of collecting mechanical watches. You just made an electronically controlled mechanical watch and that's like Barry bonds hitting a bunch of fake home runs.

Your opinion. I look at the spring drive system as a mechanical watch with an ingenious electronic system that controls the rate at which the spring unwinds, akin to the conventional balance wheel and anchor escapement, only much more precise and not subject to positional variations. It requires no batteries and is powered like a conventional automatic or hand wound movement. It's a fantastic invention, how it is viewed is up to the individual.

Just back from Japan and boy do they look pretty and the finishing is immaculate.

Boutique in Kumamoto was a special place 😗 (compared to the 3 watches at Rolex) a heap more models that I have never seen before or can even find on their website now.

The whole what powers them doesn’t bother me….

I think of it more like a supercar with an auto gearbox rather than a manual. It's still very much mechanical but with electronic regulation. Or, in my analogy, an internal combustion engine with the car changing gears for you.

If I were to buy a GS it would be a Spring drive with a PR in the back, seeing the seconds hand running as smooth as it does is eye candy.

What happens when the electronic component goes out?
As long as the component is available, and either sufficient documentation or people exist to replace it, there should be no problem. This holds true for any component, mechanical or electronic. There are plenty of Rolex 1570s out there that can't be repaired because the crown isn't distributing parts anymore.

I'll stick with traditional movements. I absolutely love my vacheron constintin. It's already seen one life and I'm sure it will be ticking when I'm gone.

I'm not a big fan of Rolex. I think people pay for a name not a watch.

For the 21 thousand dollar price tag I would have to go with the Omega seamaster 600m only a grand more and in my opinion looks better. Plus you get a 5 year warranty.

I’m just saying… I love mine. The pink hue is juuuuuust perfect. Truly reminds me of cherry blossoms. Titanium build makes it incredibly light. And the spring drive sweep is so smooth. Very glad I pulled the trigger.
