Thoughts on a 166.010 Seamaster

Well, a recent near-miss with a Speedy has left me wanting to add some more Omega, and lately I had really been enjoying some of the older Connies and SMs on the various threads, particularly 60s era pieces on BoR bracelets.

As it happens, an off-forum, online acquaintance of mine is selling their 166.010 - I'll have to find a BoR, but what do you guys think of this as a starting piece for the plan? Proof of service available, apparently.

Plexi may be modern, but crown and vertical brushing on the sides look original to me. Why no caseback gasket though? If it has been serviced without bothering with a gasket there is a problem...

I should've clarified, the pics are pre-service from what I've been told - I imagine the old one was tossed aside for the images to be taken cleanly. Will double-check that though.

I like it too. Honest piece with a very nice dial and some wear to the case.

Case looks ever so slight nibbled in places but that's kind of picky. It's nice overall.

These are great wearers as well imo and the market probably values them at the top of the non-chronometer, time only Seamaster range.

I recently picked up a 166.010 after lusting for one for many years. They really are stunning on the wrist. Coming with a service makes the this appeal more. I think it looks very nice too.

Mine is having a service right now, Can't wait for it to be back in my hands

Good Luck

Looks great. I succumbed a couple of months ago.
Just remember that these photos catch all those marks and shadows that you’ll never notice when you wear it.
The dial, the hands and the case - the bits you see - all look to be in great condition, and that’s the important bit in any purchase decision. A good service can take care of the rest.
The only other issue is price, but if you’ve researched it and you’re happy the that takes care of that n

I posted my 166.032 in the WRUW thread yesterday - love this watch. Albeit different from the 166.010 you're considering, which in my view looks to be in pretty good shape consistent with the comments above, these 60's pieces are quite special when well taken care of. Good luck!

We've known each other a while, so hopefully we'll reach a happy conclusion...so far it looks like finding a good solid BoR is going to be the harder part!

Obviously you’ve set your heart on a BoR but you could always buy an aftermarket one until a vintage one comes up.

For my part, I find a soft leather strap far more comfortable.

I actually don't object to an aftermarket BoR (too strenuously, anyway), just starting to research if anyone does a solid version with properly shaped endlinks. If anyone knows of one that does, feel free to turn my noggin in that direction!

I'm hoping to make a 3 watch rotation from what is currently a 6-piece rota - a diver, an Air King vintage I usually wear on leather, and (potentially) the 166.010, so I figure that gives a nice variety visually. I usually try to keep a spare leather or NATO for each piece I own, and this one does seem to work well on a nice classic stitch dark leather.

Thanks to all for the input! With a little luck I'm hopeful this one is going to be a winner! 😀

*Update: ::facepalm1:: That mostly bitter bitter-sweet moment when a mutual friend beats you to it 😲🙄

Omega! 3010/511 for $450 in USA.

I plan to buy one for mine as soon as I get permanently employed.

Ah well, the hunt is most of the fun. I'm already considering a more worn 14701 as a part resto-project and then finish it with the BoR, debating whether to go for it or not doesn't come on bracelet shown in top image):

The 'SWISS MADE' at the 6:00 almost seems over-applied, like a zealous touchup - what do you guys think?
